Medical Marijuana Q&A: The Doctor is In

Dr. Phillip Leveque & Bonnie King Salem-News.com

Reefer madness is alive and well in America today, and comes face to face with Oregon's most well-known medical marijuana physician in this report as he reveals many untruths still being propagated.

(SALEM, Ore.) - What exactly is Reefer Madness? Is it a notion, a movie... a propaganda project of the government? The answer would be yes to all of the above.

The movie was bankrolled and produced in the 1930's to convince Americans that using this natural herb was more than dangerous; it made people believe that those who smoke pot turn into ax murderers.

Why the paranoia? The biggest reason is that Dow Chemicals and DuPont had created "synthetic rope" in the 30's and needed to clear the market of the hemp rope, which is also the strongest natural fiber known to man. That strength of the cannabis plant is the reason they make parachute rope out of it.

The marijuana plant allowed George H.W. Bush to bail out of his Navy dive bomber during WWII and survive, thanks to his chute opening and holding fast.

Dr. Phillip Leveque and Bonnie King bring some of this history to life in our latest video segment; and more importantly they discuss how it lingers and still applies today. The stigma of marijuana use being "irresponsible" still influences decisions and improperly directs the sick and ill away from the potential benefits of this plant. It still comes between families and friends, to no avail. Education cures this problem.

As the federal government finally begins to recognize the rights of states when it comes to medical marijuana, Dr. Leveque's humorous and yet serious position is more important than ever.
