Salem's original cartoon found exclusively at Salem-News.com
(Salem, Ore.) - Well, as near as I can figure this should mark three years of my doing comics for Salem-News.com. That's a lot of time and a fair number of comics. When I thought about doing an online comic I knew I wanted it to be paced differently than print comics.
Print media is limited in the space it can take up. Newspaper comics as you may have noticed are shrinking. Space is money, but there are no such restrictions in the digital world. Most comics try to have their say in three or so panels. There's an art to that.
I wanted to have a longer beat, a chance to wax at length on a subject, but not to get bloated about it. I settled on the four page, 16 panel format after a little experimentation.
It endured for a hundred installments of Nota Bene and has serviced Benny & Sid reasonably well, too. Although there was a stretch when I tried to have my say on digital billboards, but that didn't last long.
I hope you've enjoyed reading these as much as I've enjoyed making them. They've been a release of ideas which otherwise only my wife would hear me grumble about.
