The search and rescue effort continues
(MT HOOD, Ore.) - The Clackamas County Sheriff's Office has formally announced that Search and Rescue (SAR) personnel have located one of the missing climbers on Mount Hood.
This person was located by SAR volunteers, deceased, at approximately 10:00 a.m. on the Reid Glacier, at about the 9,000' level of Mount Hood.
This deceased climber is identified as 26-year old Luke T. Gullberg of Demoines, Washington.
The body of Luke Gullberg has been transported off the mountain by SAR volunteers and is presently in the custody of the Clackamas County Deputy Medical Examiner. A forensic examination of the deceased is anticipated soon.
SAR personnel were unable to locate the two additional climbers who are known to have been climbing with Luke Gullberg.
These remaining two additional climbers are identified as:
1. Anthony Vietti, age 24, of Longview, Washington.
2. Katti Nolan, age 29, of Portland, Oregon
The Clackamas County Sheriff's Office, Search and Rescue Coordinators, emphasize this ongoing mission remains as a Rescue mission –- with the search efforts to resume once again on Sunday morning at first light.
The weather conditions on Mount Hood are expected to improve and will hopefully provide SAR personnel greater searching capabilities.
"All three of these climbers were well equipped and experienced climbers," said Clackamas County Sheriff's Office Spokesman Detective Jim Strovink, who summoned the additional assistance of Portland Mountain Rescue for the Sunday mission. In addition, calls for assistance have been transmitted to Corvallis Mountain Rescue and the Hood River Craig Rats.
Once again, the Sheriff's Office wishes to acknowledge the commendable efforts provided all the volunteers engaged in this critical ongoing mission. This remains a rescue mission and rescue personnel will be resuming the search for the two remaining climbers at approximately 5:00 a.m. Sunday morning.
"Relatives of the climbers are present here at Timberline, and are providing each other comfort during this painful ordeal," said Strovink.
