CARTS connects the Cherriots bus system in Salem with Dallas, Rickreall, Monmouth and Independence.

(SALEM) - Chemeketa Area Regional Transportation (CARTS) bus line riders have a reason to be happy. By next summer, thanks to a $141,000 grant from the Oregon Department of Transportation, 20 bus shelters will be built throughout Marion and Polk counties.

Almost 56,000 people used CARTS buses in Polk County last year Valerie Rux, CARTS coordinator said.

A one-way ticket on CARTS to Salem is $1.70 for adults, $1.20 for youth, 80 cents for the handicapped and senior citizens, and free for children under 6.

Buses operate from 6:25 AM to 7:14 PM on Route 1, which goes from Dallas to West Salem and then back to Dallas via Independence and Monmouth.

Buses run from 6:10 AM to 6:38 PM on Route 2, which starts in Dallas and goes through Monmouth and Independence to West Salem, then returns to Dallas via Highway 22.
