(GERVAIS, Ore.) - It was a bad call to say the least, and a Gervais dad’s apparent attempt to keep his teenage son from being arrested by a police officer is likely to land him behind bars for a long time.

Oregon laws, like in many states, are particularly stringent when it comes to physically assaulting police.

Marion County Sheriff’s Office Spokesman Kevin Rau says shortly before 5:00 PM Wednesday, an officer with the Gervais Police Department was attempting to make contact with a teenager at 880 4th St in Gervais as part of a criminal investigation involving a 15-year-old male that lives there.

Rau says the officer made contact with the juvenile at the door, “but when the officer told the juvenile he was under arrest the young man ran back into the house.”

As the officer attempted to catch the young man, his father, 43-year-old Javier Beltran, allegedly began assaulting the officer, causing minor injuries.

The officer was able to get out of the house and call for assistance. Officer from the Gervais Police Department, Woodburn Police Department, Hubbard Police Department, Oregon State Police and Deputies from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office responded to assist.

The Sheriff’s Office Interagency SWAT team was called to the scene as a precaution. Rau says that once contact was made with the occupants of the house, all came out of the house when instructed to do so and complied with directions given by SWAT team members.

Beltran was arrested for Assaulting and Interfering with a Public Safety Officer.

His 15-year-old son was arrested for attempted escape and resisting arrest as well as charges from the previous ongoing investigation into the theft of a car.

The officer was transported to Silverton Hospital by medics where he was treated for minor injuries and released.
