Investigators believe that the fire was caused by sparks from a grinder or a welder. A video clip from Bill Holmstrom at Salem Fire has been added at the bottom of the story.
(SALEM) - A commercial fire destroyed an automotive hobby shop in Salem Halloween night. It appears that the fire may have been sparked by some late night welding.
Bob Barnes and his brother Terry both worked out of the hobby shop located at 2890 Brooks Avenue NE.
Tuesday night, Bob was doing some welding and other things to his vehicles and when he finished for the night, he didn't notice anything that was unusual.
Then Salem Fire Department received the call for a structure fire at the above address at 10:30 PM. This call brought help from 3 Engines, 1 Ladder Truck, and a Battalion Chief.
Salem Fire Department Spokesman Bill Holmstrom says the first firefighters arriving on the scene reported that the building was fully involved.
"A second alarm was called bringing more firefighters and apparatus to the scene. Firefighters had to switch to a defensive attack, the building and all of its contents were on fully involved with fire."
Holmstrom says firefighters had the fire under control within approximately 30 minutes. No injuries were reported.
Lost inside the building were a brand new ATV and all the tools and equipment that the Barnes brothers used in restoring the vehicles.
The building was not insured at the time of the fire.
