Police said that John Cassady's blood alcohol content was 0.18 percent, more than twice the legal limit.
(CORVALLIS) - Oregon State University vice president for research John Cassady was arrested last month on drunken driving and assault charges after crashing his car into two of his neighbors' garages.
The 68-year-old was booked at the Benton County jail and charged with driving under the influence of intoxicants, criminal mischief, reckless endangerment and fourth-degree assault stemming from the Nov. 18th incident.
According to Corvallis police Cassady was driving with his wife, Nancy, and crashed his 2003 Oldsmobile into two garages near the couples home on Southwest Fairhaven Court.
Police said that Cassady had a breath alcohol content of 0.18 percent, more than twice the legal limit.
Two vehicles in neighbors’ garages were damaged in the incident. The criminal mischief charge was related to those damages as well as to the damage to Cassady’s own car.
Police say the assault charge resulted from the fact that his wife sustained cuts on her face and hand that required stitches.
Cassady’s next court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 11th.
Cassady joined OSU as Vice President for Research in March 2005.
Cassady earned the PhD in Organic Chemistry at Case-Western Reserve University.
He was formerly Dean and Professor of Medicinal Chemistry, College of Pharmacy, Ohio State University, and before that Distinguished Professor and Head of the Department of Medicinal Chemistry and Pharmacognosy at Purdue University.
