Newport, Oregon Soldier Dies at Walter Reed Medical Center

Nicholas was injured March 15th when an improvised explosive device detonated near his unit while on combat patrol in Baghdad.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - The Department of Defense announced today the death of a soldier who was supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom.

29-year old Nicholas J. Lightner of Newport died March 21st from wounds suffered in Iraq.

Nicholas Lightner was injured March 15th when an improvised explosive device detonated near his unit while on combat patrol in Baghdad.

He had been transported back to the United States and was under care at the Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington D.C.

Nicholas Lightner had been assigned to the 1st Squadron, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.
