The cause of the fire was determined to be an overheated fan in the restroom.
(SALEM) - A report of flames coming out of a Starbucks coffee house sent Salem firefighters scrambling Friday. Fire Spokesman Bill Holmstrom says the call came in at 10:46 AM.
He says several fire units quickly arrived at the location in downtown Salem at 399 Court Street NE.
"Firefighters received reports prior to their arrival of flames being seen coming from the building. A second alarm was called at 10:48 am sending more firefighters and fire apparatus to the scene."
Holmstrom says the second alarm was canceled after firefighters arrived on scene and discovered the fire was contained to the restroom.
"All customers and employees evacuated the building without injury. One of the customers used a portable fire extinguisher to help contain the fire."
The cause of the fire was determined to be an overheated fan in the restroom. The loss is estimated at $5,000 for the Structure and $2,000 for the building's contents.
Holmstrom says there is a safety message that goes with this story, "Salem Fire Department wants to remind everyone that restroom fans can over\heat if left on." It could lead to injuries, property damage or worse, Holmstrom says it is a good practice to shut fans off every time they are not in use.
