Last year’s the food drive generated more than 80,000 pounds of food throughout Marion and Polk counties.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Letter carriers in Salem will join letter carriers across America to do much more than deliver mail when they walk and drive along their postal routes on Saturday.

They will also collect donations of nonperishable food from their postal customers to Stamp Out Hunger during the annual National Association of Letter Carriers Food Drive -the largest one-day food drive for Marion-Polk Food Share.

The process is simple. Here’s how the community can help letter carriers Stamp Out Hunger:

Watch your mailbox for two special items:

A card, announcing the NALC food drive

A specially-marked plastic bag.

2) Fill the bag with nutritious, nonperishable food. Please do NOT include glass containers, homemade items or containers that have already been opened.

3) Place the filled bags by your mailbox on the morning of Saturday, May 12th.

On Saturday, letter carriers will collect nonperishable food donations left by mailboxes along their routes and take them to Marion-Polk Food Share.

Last year’s the food drive generated more than 80,000 pounds of food throughout Marion and Polk counties.

“Letter Carriers remains one of our biggest food drives and certainly the biggest one-day drive. We appreciate the support of the letter carriers and the community in making this happen. It will mean much-needed food for the hungry in our two counties – especially the children, who represent nearly half of those we serve,” said Ron Hays, Executive Director of Marion-Polk Food Share.

Most needed foods include canned tuna, peanut butter, soups, chili, Macaroni & Cheese, canned fruits, canned vegetables, cereal and pasta.

Marion Polk Food Share is one of 20 regional food banks in the Oregon Food Bank Network.

Founded in 1987, Food Share is “leading the fight to end hunger” in Marion and Polk counties through a network of 70 member charities.
