Salem Man Accidentally Shoots Himself in the Chest

(SALEM, Ore. ) - A Salem man is lucky to be alive today, after he accidentally shot himself while cleaning a handgun.

Salem police say 26-year-old Arturo Camarillo was cleaning his .22-caliber revolver at his home on 25th St NE when the gun fired, hitting him in the chest.

Camarillo was rushed to Salem Hospital, and is in fair condition.

No charges will be filed in this case.

According to the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, teenagers and children are involved in more than 10,000 accidental shootings in which close to 800 people die each year.

Over the period from 1993 to 2002, the U.S. Department of Labor

Bureau of Labor Statistics found that 175 workers were killed on the job as a result of an accidental gunshot wound -- an average of about 18 fatalities per year during that 10-year span.
