Woman Seriously Hurt After Collision with Horses on Highway

Three people were injured, four horses died as a result of the crash.

(PROSPECT, Ore.) - A Redmond-area woman was seriously injured Friday night when her van struck several horses on Highway 62 near Prospect. Police say they had already dispatched troopers to the area over a report of 40 horses in the roadway, but the crash happened prior to their arrival.

Last night at 9:59 PM, a 2002 Ford van driven by 41-year old Katherine Chandler of Redmond, was eastbound on Highway 62 near milepost 41 when it collided with four horses that were in the highway.

As a result of the crash, two horses died on impact, and one horse had to be put down by the owners at the scene due to the injuries it sustained. OSP Troopers were notified later that a fourth horse had to be put down due to injuries sustained in the crash.

Katherine Chandler was transported by Mercy Flights ground ambulance to Rogue Valley Medical Center in Medford with serious injuries.

Two passengers in the van, 12-year old Jessi Chandler, and 10-year old Colton Chandler were also transported to with minor injuries.

Safety restraints were in use by the driver and the two passengers.

Oregon State Police Troopers were assisted at the scene by Prospect and Shady Cove Fire Districts and Mercy Flights Ground ambulance.
