(HUNTINGTON, Utah) - Rescue workers broke through late Thursday night with a small steel tube to the pocket of a Utah coal mine where six coal miners have been trapped since Monday.

A small microphone lowered into the chamber picked up no immediate sounds to indicate the men are still alive.

Officials said the lack of sound was not definitive, and they will continue to work boring larger holes that will allow cameras and, ultimately, food and water to be sent underground.

Mining officials were able to take an air reading from the pocket and said the air quality was good, with 20.5 percent oxygen, some carbon monoxide and no methane.
