The unedited clip made by the Vice-President in 1994 outlines a series of reasons invading Iraq would be a very bad idea.
(SALEM, Ore.) - Vice-President Dick Cheney has been steadfast in his support of the U.S. invasion of Iraq under President George W. Bush.
In fact, according to an Interview with Vice-President Dick Cheney, NBC, "Meet the Press," from March 16, 2003, he said that the mission would end with total success. He convinced the American public for the most part, that our forces would be greeted as liberators.
Here is an excerpt from Cheney's appearance on that show where he talked about the determination to go to Iraq with or without the U.N.
Cheney: "And over time, given Saddam’s posture there, given the fact that he has a significant flow of cash as a result of the oil production of Iraq, it’s only a matter of time until he acquires nuclear weapons. And in light of that, we have to be prepared, I think, to take the action that is being contemplated. Doesn’t insist that he be disarmed and if the U.N. won’t do it, then the United States and other partners of the coalition will have to do that."
Cheney's statement on that program were the words of an administration official intent on waging a war in Iraq while the nation's forces were already fighting Anti Coalition Militias in Afghanistan.
He emphasized during the interview with Tim Russert that our presence would be well received.
Cheney: "Now, I think things have gotten so bad inside Iraq, from the standpoint of the Iraqi people, my belief is we will, in fact, be greeted as liberators."
Cheney also talked about his concern that Iraq could eventually be a danger to Americans here on our soil.
Cheney: "And we don’t have the option anymore of simply laying back and hoping that events in Iraq will not constitute a threat to the U.S." "Clearly, 12 years after the Gulf War, we’re back in a situation where he does constitute a threat."
Interestingly, a video clip of Dick Cheney recorded in 1994 is now getting big play on YouTube, shows what sounds like a totally different person talking about the exact same thing. In '94 Cheney was against invading Iraq, and he says a number of problems would keep that from being a successful military idea.
