Off-Duty Officer Shoots, Kills Armed Man (UPDATE)

Both the off-duty police officer and the suspect who was killed, have been identified.

(SCAPPOOSE, Ore. ) - Police are investigating a shooting that involved an off-duty police officer.

According to police the incident began around 2:30 AM, when neighbors called police and said a man, thought to be a prowler, was armed with a handgun and screaming in the street near Northwest Felisha Way and Maria Lane in Scappoose.

Police said when the arrived on scene, they found a white man in his 40s holding a gun to his head.

When police confronted the man, he ran to a nearby home and pounded on the door.

The homeowner was Greg Stewart, an off-duty police officer from the Portland Police Bureau. Stewart opened the door and, after a brief confrontation, shot and killed the man.

The deceased is identified as 42-year old Jeffrey Dean Turpin of Ocean Park, Washington. An autopsy will be performed this weekend or early next week.

Police said the man was in his 40's, and not from the Scappoose area.
