(SALEM, Ore.) - The Marion County Sheriff's Office, Salem Police Department, Keizer Police Department, Oregon State Police and the non-profit Law Enforcement for Youth say they will be able to make the holidays a bit brighter for approximately 400 local children during this year's Shop With A Cop Event.
The event will be held at the Walmart store, 5250 Commercial St SE from 9:00 AM until 1:00 PM on Saturday, December 15th. This program has been going for over ten years and is funded entirely by donations from the community.
Needy children are nominated by various community entities to include the Salem and Marion County Housing Authorities, Department of Human Services, School District and community members. The children are then invited to join in on the event that teams them with law enforcement personnel at the Walmart store.
The children are given a gift card from Walmart and are accompanied by the law enforcement employee as they shop for whatever they wish in the store. Santa Claus will also be present during the event.
This is a very popular and positive event for the children and law enforcement personnel alike. It is an excellent opportunity for the children in our community to have a fun interaction with law enforcement and to form positive relationships that will last for years to come.
The public is invited to come and share in this experience as well.
