Snow Predicted in the Mountains of Washington and California
(State College, Pa.) - A seemingly never-ending train of Pacific storms will continue to roll through the Northwest this weekend, with rain and heavy mountain snow forecast through Sunday.
Rain will fall today in coastal areas west of the Cascades, while snow will fall in the mountains of Washington and California. Several inches of snow could fall today in the foothills around Seattle.
Up to a foot of new snow was expected tonight in the Cascades before moving into the northern Rockies later. Meanwhile, the Sierra Nevada could receive three to six inches today.
AccuWeather.com Western Weather Expert Paul Yeager said in his blog yesterday, "(This) storm system...might actually bring the most significant snowfall in the last four years to the northern part of the Sacramento Valley."
The next storm will move into the Northwest Saturday, dumping more heavy snow on the Cascades, with another foot falling by Saturday night.
Snow will wind down Sunday as high pressure builds into the Northwest; however, a few areas in the Cascades and northern Rockies could receive several additional inches.
National Outlook
A moderately strong winter storm has done its dirty work across the Midwest and Great Lakes. Next in line for a dump of snow are Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick and far northern New England. The average snowfall from this system will continue to be 5 or 6 inches, but smaller areas will probably wind up with a little more. In either case, the very fast movement of the system is preventing very heavy snowfall.
Southern New England and the mid-Atlantic region will escape with nothing but rain this time. Just like the snow up north, the rain will come and go over a six- to eight-hour period.
