Death of Inmate in Salem Prison Ruled a Homicide

Antonio Barrantes was incarcerated in 2003 for Assault in the Second Degree out of Multnomah County.

(SALEM, Ore.) - The Oregon State Police and the Marion County Homicide / Assault Response Team are conducting a death investigation at the Oregon State Penitentiary in Salem.

The inmate, 36-year old Antonio Barrantes-Vasquez, was found deceased in his cell at the Penitentiary on Thursday morning.

The State Medical Examiner performed an autopsy today and determined the cause of death to be homicide by blunt force trauma.

According to the Department of Corrections, Inmate Barrantes was incarcerated in 2003 for Assault in the Second Degree out of Multnomah County.

His projected release date was July, 2008. Further information regarding this investigation will be released by the Marion County District Attorney's Office as it becomes available
