A Beaverton officer attempted to pull the man over earlier the same evening.
(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Deputies in Washington County shot a man who died from his injuries Saturday evening after a short pursuit that began at about 5:30 PM. Sgt. Bob Ray with the Washington County Sheriff says both deputies have been placed on administrative leave.
The shooting is under investigation by the Washington County Major Crimes Team.
Ray says the pursuit began at SW 175th Avenue and SW Shady Peak Lane. "Two deputies pursued Shane Grundmeyer, 39 years old, after he failed to yield when they turned attempted to pull him over. Mr. Grundmeyer rammed two patrol cars during the confrontation."
Ray confirms that during the incident, two deputies fired shots at Mr. Grundmeyer. He was taken to Oregon Health Sciences University where he was pronounced dead.
"Deputies were attempting to stop Mr. Grundmeyer for multiple offenses. He had a felony warrant for fraud related crimes. He had also been involved in an incident in Beaverton earlier in the evening."
Ray says that during that earlier evening incident, a Beaverton officer attempted to stop Mr. Grundmeyer but he would not stop for the officer.
The Beaverton Officer did not pursue Mr. Grundmeyer, Ray said, sdding that Mr. Grundmeyer was also wanted for questioning related to a Washington County criminal mischief case.
The Washington County Major Crimes team is investigating the shooting along with the Washington County Crash Analysis Reconstruction Team (CART), and the Washington County Sheriff's Office Forensics Unit.
The deputies involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure.
When the investigation is complete it will be forwarded to the Washington County District Attorney's office for review.
The Sheriff's Office will also conduct an internal review of the shooting that will examine the non-criminal, use of force aspects of the shooting. Because this is an ongoing investigation no details of the shooting are being released tonight.
