The man who will replace Spitzer, 53-year-old Lt. Gov. David Paterson, will become the first black governor in the state.

(NEW YORK) - Embattled New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer handed in his resignation today effective on Monday. In a recent press conference, with his wife, Silda, at his side, Spitzer said: "I cannot allow my private failings to disrupt the people's work."

Spitzer took over the governor's office in 2006, and has faced calls for his resignation since apologizing for an undisclosed personal indiscretion Monday afternoon.

Prosecutors unsealed an affidavit detailing a rendezvous in a Washington hotel room last month as part of a federal prostitution investigation on Monday. Spitzer has reportedly spent more than $15,000 for several encounters with prostitutes.

The man who will replace Spitzer, 53-year-old Lt. Gov. David Paterson, will become the first black governor in the state and the fourth in U.S. history.
