North Santiam River Main Channel Open Again ‏(PHOTOS)

The previously reported blockage across the main channel of the North Santiam River near Jefferson has been cleared. The Oregon Marine Board reports that a large cottonwood tree was removed to the shore on June 25th.

A significant amount of trees and debris had collected in the main channel, blocking the path of boaters. This made the sections of river very dangerous because of a 90 degree turn in the river; a scenario that offered little warning.

In April, Roseburg-based North River Boats closed its doors without the means to deliver nearly 100 workers a final paycheck.

Oregon’s Wage Security Fund (WSF) protects workers in these unfortunate instances and ensures payment of final wages when a company closes and does not have sufficient funds to fully and promptly pay final wages owed to employees. The WSF, established in 1985, is unique to Oregon.

Boating Hazard Reported on South Santiam River

Boaters on the South Santiam River have reported a potentially dangerous obstruction about two miles below the Wiley Creek Park Boat Launch between Sweet Home and Foster Reservoir.

A large cottonwood tree has fallen into the river making passage especially tricky for drift boats, inner-tubers, and other types of craft, as the water levels continue to drop.

The Marine Board urges caution in this stretch of the river while managers look for a way to move the tree to a less dangerous location.
