A Twin Dilemma Solved... Something Fishy On The Fraser

If Jesus could be beamed down to earth, let's say just east of where the Port Mann Bridge spans the mighty Fraser River above its huge embouchure at the city of Vancouver, I'm not only certain that He could walk on the water.

In fact it would not require any divine circumvention as to viscosity, hydraulic principles or gravity.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has granted a five-year permit for the killing of California sea lions that are eating threatened salmon and steelhead near Bonneville Dam in northwest Oregon.

Oregon, Washington and Idaho may each year kill up to 92 sea lions that have a “significant negative impact” on at-risk salmon and steelhead runs on the Columbia River.

A noted human rights activist arrived in Sri Lanka several days ago following an international conference in Rome, and noticed that he was being followed by a van; of course potentially synonymous with the notorious 'White Van' disappearances which Sri Lanka has become internationally noted for.

The suspicious behavior of the group led him to believe that he was in danger of being abducted. Herman Kumara is currently in hiding.

All environmental indicators are pointing to this troubling possibility at a catastrophic magnitude, if the current non functioning sewage system in Gaza is not resolved urgently.

Males of Poecilia parae, a colour polymorphic fish, exhibit five distinct phenotypes: drab-coloured (immaculata), striped (parae), structural-coloured (blue) and carotenoid-based red and yellow morphs.

A Fish Story

Historically the Pacific Northwest of North America has been one of those spots in the world where food is usually always abundant. The sea along its coast has always been a good provider, and the most important gift that that sea has offered up is the Pacific salmon that once filled its rivers and streams from far west of Alaska to Central California. That is changing.

This year the return of Sockeye to the Fraser River collapsed and finally the Canadian government is ordering judicial inquiry into why this happened.

This year’s returns are so minimal that Chinook fishing in this section of water is totally closed. However, my love for this section of water is far more about the experience of being there than putting meat on the bank.

Trolling Oregon's Coastline in the Post-Dramamine Era

Fishing on the ocean has never been my favorite thing. As a kid (and as a young adult) I can clearly remember spending ocean trips leaning over the rail feeding the fish. That exhausting queezy feeling just wasn’t something I looked forward to repeating. However, I also like fresh fish in my freezer, so a compromise had to be made.

My buddy Scott recently organized a tuna trip off the Oregon Coast. This caused me to face my fears head on. I learned that the days of Dramamine are now over, and the new anti-motion sickness drug of choice is called Meclazine.
