<title> Dear Editor of The Jewish Times: Please re-think your call to assassinate Obama</title>
<description> When an apparently logical line of reasoning leads to an illogical or insane conclusion, it is time to re-think your logic.

I’m no Obama fan either, but let’s face it, publishing calls for his assassination is stupid and immoral as well as illegal! And war with Iran would be a disaster!

<title> Jim Crow and Troy Davis</title>
<description> We reported earlier this evening that the execution of Troy Davis in Georgia was to be temporarily delayed, just five minutes before being killed by state officials.

Now we know that officials in Georgia went ahead anyway, after the U.S. Supreme Court denied a last minute stay of execution.

<title> Troy Davis Execution Delayed - Then Carried Out</title>
<description> Officials have delayed the execution of Troy Davis in Georgia after intense public pressure. He was within five minutes of losing his life. It is only a temporary reprieve, but that does not necessarily diminish the impact.

Davis, charged and convicted for the 1989 shooting death of a police officer, he has maintained his innocence for 21 years. Supporters of Davis are widespread and watching the developments closely.

<title> The Worst Kind of Injustice</title>
<description> In moments of immense sadness, moments that shake the foundation of our faith in the justice system and mankind, adequate words are scarce. Today, the Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles co-signed on the decision to execute Troy Davis.

Despite overwhelming evidence pointing to his innocence -- evidence that prompted former FBI Director William Sessions and more than a million others to write in support of clemency -- Troy's execution is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Wednesday, September 21.

<title> Troy Davis: Calling for Clemency</title>
<description> I am writing to you from Atlanta, from the mist of a full-out clemency campaign. Troy Davis (a man on Georgia's death row despite a compelling case of innocence) is slated to be executed on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. His clemency hearing in front of the Georgia Board of Pardons &amp; Parole is on Monday.

The worldwide mobilization that has taken off in support of Troy has been overwhelming. Yesterday, I witnessed the deliver of petitions with more than 650,000 signatures to the Board of Pardons and Parole.

<description> The case against him consisted entirely of witness testimony which contained inconsistencies even at the time of the trial. Since then, all but two of the state's non-police witnesses from the trial have recanted or contradicted their testimony.

Many of these witnesses have stated in sworn affidavits that they were pressured or coerced by police into testifying or signing statements against Troy Davis.

American politics are getting more bizarre and in some cases, borders on the nutty. Current politics include Republican legislatures in Texas, Arizona, Georgia and Minnesota fighting for their "rights" to reject energy efficiency light bulbs, while South Carolina will manufacture their own state's rights incandescent bulbs.

<title> U.S. Role in Georgia Crisis: What We Should Know</title>
<description> The international condemnation of Russian aggression against Georgia – and the concomitant assaults by Abkhazians and South Ossetians against ethnic Georgians within their territories – is in large part appropriate.

It has been nearly impossible to even broach this subject of the U.S. role. Much of the mainstream media coverage and statements by American political leaders of both major parties has in many respects resembled the anti-Russian hysterics of the Cold War. </description>

<description> The war between Georgia and Russia was so precipitous as to take the world by surprise. A Russian Peace-keeping force was stationed in Ossetia, after the separation a decade or more ago, to protect against what has now happened.

<title> Oregon Average Drops Below $4 Per Gallon</title>
<description> Oregon's statewide average for regular unleaded is less than $4 per gallon for the first time since the last week of May. The statewide average falls seven cents this week to $3.99, and only one measured metro area in Oregon, Medford/Ashland, has an average above $4.

The national average declines for the 26th day in a row, also dropping seven cents this week to $3.80 a gallon." AAA Oregon Public Affairs Director Marie Dodds says, "Oregon's average is down 28 cents in the past month, while the national average has lost 30 cents. The national average should easily dip below $3.75 a gallon as soon as this week, and could drop another 15 cents per gallon by Labor Day."

<title> Understanding the Russian Invasion of Georgia</title>
<description> Accusations are flying as to who is responsible for the bloodshed in Georgia, a country that many Russians say has become a puppet government of the U.S. and other western nations.

Both the United States and Israel have been providing Georgia with military hardware under increasingly friendly political arrangements in recent years. We can only hope that this did not give the former Soviet Republic's leaders a false sense of courage against its neighbor to the north: Mother Russia. It may turn out to be a fatal mistake.

Despite its current alliances, the violence in Georgia undoubtedly evolves from tensions that have been simmering since the end of the Cold War in the 1980s.

<title> Will Russia Repeat Horrors of Afghanistan in Georgia?</title>
<description> I will never forget the horror stories about the Russians in Afghanistan. People there harbor a hatred so fierce and venomous toward the former Soviets that it is hard to describe with words. The patterns of abuse carried out by Russian soldiers at war is well documented and it rings of some of the most primitive and cruel behavior ever recorded.

The Soviets invaded Afghanistan for a decade, beginning in 1979. It happened because the Afghans weren't towing the Communist line. I hate to wonder how many similarities there are between what is happening in Georgia today and what happened to Afghanistan.
