Remembering the hard economy and divisive politics of recent years, Governor Kulongoski emphasized the moment of opportunity facing Oregon today and asked legislators and the public to join him in a commitment to bridging the divides and working together to turn “this great moment of opportunity into Oregon’s longest and strongest period of prosperity.”

Big O Leap of Faith Forced By Realities In Media Open-Market

The top man at The Big O has proven his individual worthiness and professional character in his detailed statement today (10/22) about “the process The Oregonian’s editorial board and I went through to reach our conclusions”.

He is, of course, explaining not only the process but also reporting on the overwhelming surprise --to say the least-- forced upon the most friendly of readers by the endorsement of Ron Saxton published last Sunday as “a leap of faith”.

Governor Working on Bi-Partisan Plan to Put More Troopers on Oregon Highways

Governor Kulongoski says that he will propose a program to the 2007 Legislature that will strengthen the Oregon State Police by providing 24-hour, seven-days-a-week patrol coverage on Oregon’s highways, and beefing up criminal investigation and crime-lab services to fight meth trafficking, ID theft and other crimes.

“We must restore full capability to the Oregon State Police,” the Governor said. “For the sake of our troopers, and for the safety of our citizens, we must rebuild this critical agency. I am committed to fighting for the safety of our communities and adequate investment in our State Police.”

In 1979, the State Police had 665 sworn, fulltime troopers, the Governor pointed out. Because of successive budget cutbacks during the past 27 years, the agency now has only 333 -- about half as many, even though the state’s population has grown by more than a million, or 40 percent.

Governor Calls on State High Education Board to Make College More Affordable

Governor Kulongoski urged State Board of Higher Education Friday to adopt a plan that makes higher education affordable for all Oregonians by the time this year’s eighth graders enter college. The plan, which expands the Oregon Opportunity Grants, is an integral part of the Governor’s Education Enterprise.

“When it comes to a college education, we need to help not only our neediest students, but our middle-class students as well,” said Governor Ted Kulongoski. “This is a plan that should appeal to everyone – because before a student can qualify for a state education grant, he or she must maximize resources from the federal government, from their own families and through their own sweat equity.”

Governor Fights Labor Protection Rollback

Governor Kulongoski directed his office Thursday to personally deliver a letter – signed by all Democratic members of Oregon’s Congressional delegation – urging the National Labor Relations Board to conduct open public hearings on rulings that could severely weaken core worker protections.

"My efforts to protect Oregon’s middle class and create a strong and fair economy are dependent upon a healthy labor movement in our country. Oregonians deserve to be heard in decisions that could weaken worker rights and core labor protections," said the Governor.

At stake is the ability of nurses, building trade workers, electricians, construction workers and many other skilled workers to organize collectively for health care, worker safety, living wages and much more.

Governor Kulongoski Will Try to Halt Federal Timber Sale

Oregon Governor Ted Kulongoski says he will file for a temporary restraining order in the Federal District Court in San Francisco to stop the federal government from proceeding with the sale of timber in the South Kalmiopsis Roadless Area of the Siskiyou National Forest.

Citing the need to protect roadless areas in the region of the 2002 Biscuit fire, Governor Kulongoski said that today`s federal timber auction would foreclose his ability to influence the management of Oregon`s unroaded national forests when he petitions the federal government later this year.

The U.S. Forest Service is moving forward with the timber sale despite the Governor`s March 9th letter requesting the agency not do so.

School Employees Back Kulongoski

In an about face, a union representing school classified workers has endorsed Democratic Gov. Ted Kulongoski over Republican Ron Saxton for the fall governor's race.

The Oregon School Employees Association had backed Kulongoski's Democratic primary challenger, Jim Hill, only a few months ago, saying that Oregon's schools were worse off now than they were when Kulongoski took office.

Howard Dean Urges Democrats to Unite Behind Kulongoski

Former presidential candidate and Democratic National Committee Chair Howard Dean urged Oregon Democrats to rally around Gov. Ted Kulongoski's re-election bid this fall, saying that a Kulongoski victory will be part of the party's national effort to turn the tide against the policies of President Bush and the Republicans.

Dean gave the opening address Friday night as hundreds of Oregon Democrats gathered in Eugene for their state convention to draft a new party platform and adopt party positions on ballot initiatives prior to the November general election.

The former Vermont governor and Kulongoski arrived on stage together to loud applause from the Democratic faithful. Dean made it clear he thinks it's time for Democrats to put aside any differences from the just-ended May primary election and rally around Kulongoski.

Specialist Loveless was assigned to the Army`s 2nd Battalion, 1st Infantry Regiment, 172nd Stryker Brigade combat Team of Fort Wainwright, Alaska. He was killed on May 29th, when his Stryker came under enemy small arms fire in Mosul, Iraq.

"The death of Specialist Loveless is a profound loss," said Governor Kulongoski. "Loveless epitomized the spirit of a true Oregonian. He took care of his family by trying to better himself, his community through volunteering...
