This week, in preparation for the upcoming summer fire season, students are learning the finer points of wildland firefighting and honing their skills, until they get it right. Deputies were dispatched to the emergency room late in the evening on January 16th for a report of a possible child abuse incident. The caller informed dispatch that 26-year old Michael Shain Thompson of Foster, had come to the residence uninvited armed with a gun and was threatening people. Linn County Sheriff Tim Mueller says that prior to the deputies’ arrival, residents disarmed Thompson. Problems continued though, when Thompson allegedly obtained a knife. Before the scuffle was over, two residents were injured in the altercation. A large cottonwood tree has fallen into the river making passage especially tricky for drift boats, inner-tubers, and other types of craft, as the water levels continue to drop.
