Mexican Workers Pulverized in the 21st Century

A new study reconfirms what many people know from first-hand experience: Mexican workers' purchasing power has plummeted since the turn of the century.

According to the analysis, Mexican workers earning the daily minimum wage had to toil 11.38 hours in December 2011 to buy a basic basket of commodities...

Truck drivers at the Port of Seattle have walked off the job by the hundred, leaving lawmakers in a quandary.

Drivers at several trucking companies that haul containers between the port and intermodal rail yards say the companies they contract with are paying them at less than the market rate.

Take Action to Stop Use of the Military Against Unions and Workers

Monday, Occupy Oakland and labor organizations have called a demonstration to protest the use of armed Coast Guard cutters and helicopters to escort a ship into the port of Longview, Washington to load grain from the EGT terminal.

The terminal is being picketed by the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU)... this is a struggle for their survival.

The International Longshore and Warehouse Union is waging a battle against union-busting. ILWU Local 21 in Longview, Washington is under attack by a giant consortium, EGT, which has built a $200 million grain terminal and is running it as a scab operation.

This directly violates the port agreement with ILWU which has had jurisdiction for over 75 years.

New report says Irish emigration, unemployment set to grow

A new Quarterly Economic Commentary report published by the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) in Ireland estimates that with the eurozone crisis continuing to cast a shadow over any possible Irish economic recovery, tens of thousands will continue to emigrate from the country in 2012.

“The financial crisis currently gripping the eurozone, coupled with tightening fiscal policy across the region, are likely to send the eurozone back into recession,” the report reads.

What started as a popular revolt in Tunisia in late 2010 and spread throughout the Arab world has now gone world wide as people gather everywhere to protest the current order.

First stop: The home of the President of the United States and his Administration’s Environmental Protection Agency. This group steals more jobs and wealth in one week than a corporate jet full of greedy bankers in a lifetime.

As we all now know, the United States is in economic and political turmoil. The Dow Jones Industrial Average is down 9.5 percent in August, partly because of concern about the health of the U.S. and European economies.

What we need now is jobs, jobs, jobs. And not just low-paying jobs that are unlikely to provide sufficient wages to live on.

Living Wages

When I leave a restaurant, in addition to leaving a generous tip, I silently thank everyone working there for giving me money. They hadn’t given me money directly of course, but they did indirectly, in that they are not paid a living wage which is reflected in lower meal costs. In other words they paid for part of my meal.

The standard rebuttal from restaurant owners is that they would “like” to pay their people more, but in order to remain competitive they have to cut costs as much as possible.

Both India and USA are democracies, one the largest and the other the oldest, both with volunteer militaries statutorily under civilian control. Just as the two democracies have much to learn from each other, so too, have their respective militaries and their respective veterans.

There is perhaps no society, past or present, in which all sections of people have become prosperous, especially in the latter sense.

The second is the American fantasy of individuality and self-reliance which eschews citizen cooperation. There is a good explanation for the first; the second is equivalent to an urban legend.
