Improving the Community’s Health Salem Hospital Facility Replacement Project

Companies now assess how well hospitals do in providing that quality, evidence-based care, and make the information public. Salem Hospital’s intensive work to improve quality has garnered the hospital a number of recent awards.
(SALEM, Ore.) -
Salem Hospital and the Salem area have grown up together. When Salem Hospital opened its doors it had five beds, and served the 4,000 people who lived in Salem.
Today, Salem Hospital serves both Marion and Polk counties, and beyond. With a combined population of more than 378,000 people, much has changed in these two counties.

Study Awards Salem Hospital Five-Star Rating

Study finds patient outcomes at Salem Hospital among nation's best for coronary bypass surgery, coronary interventional procedures and treatment of heart attack.
(SALEM, Ore.) -
According to the Tenth Annual HealthGrades Hospital Quality in America Study, Salem Hospital is five-star rated for cardiac, orthopedic and gastrointestinal services for 2008.
The study, the largest of its kind, analyzed patient outcomes at virtually all of the nation's 5,000 hospitals over the years 2004, 2005 and 2006.

Salem Hospital Auxiliary Announces Scholarship Winners

The named scholarships carry awards of $1,000 each.
(SALEM, Ore. ) -
The Salem Hospital Auxiliary has awarded scholarships totaling $26,050 to 52 local area students.
All recipients are enrolled in medically related fields of study for the 2007–2008 school year.
The Laura Prince Scholarship was awarded to Joann Kerrigan, of Salem.

Major Changes Begin Monday at Salem Hospital

(SALEM) -
Big changes start this week, as Salem Hospital begins building new sky bridges.
Starting Monday -- Hospital entry changes: Because the new sky bridge connecting the current hospital to the new tower will be near the entry of the current hospital, traffic at the front entry needs to be limited during construction. This change will be in effect for 10 to 12 weeks.
The valet parking service is moving to the west side of the hospital (the back side).
To use the valet service, enter using the South drive, between the hospital and the Oregon School for the Blind's playground.
The north entrance, adjacent to the ER, is only for ambulances and people going to the ER.

Why wait for another 5,000 additional population before waking up?

When the news rolled off the presses that Oregon State Hospital will be receiving a wholesale makeover due to its aging, unsafe buildings, no particular mention was made the fact that traffic on Center St. often fails to roll.
As it happens, Center Street gets siphoned from four to two lanes just past 14th St., near the Mill Creek Bridge. Motorists suddenly are consumed in this bottleneck, especially during rush hours. When a huge truck or Cherriot bus maintains a super-slow pace, anyone behind them is effected.

78 Evacuated From Oregon State Hospital While Salem Fire Extinguishes Problem

Residents were evacuated from the building into a fenced-in yard
(SALEM) -
Monday afternoon at 3:16, the Salem Fire Department responded to a call for smoke in a structure at Oregon State Hospital Building 48.
Firefighters arrived to find a smoke-filled 2nd floor hallway with smoke billowing out from under a closed door in a common area of the building.
Firefighters quickly extinguished a couch on fire in the closed room, and pulled down ceiling tiles looking for any extension of the fire into the ceiling areas of the room and hallway.
The couch fire appeared to have been started by a resident using a contraband lighter.

Salem Hospital's Urgent Care Center is extending its hours for the upcoming holiday season, in an effort to support the Salem Hospital's busy emergency room, and to provide additional resources to the community for minor illness and injury.
The Salem Hospital Urgent Care Center will be open:
Thanksgiving, Nov. 23rd, from noon to 6:00 PM.
Dec. 23rd, 24th and 25th, noon to 6:00 PM.
Dec. 31st and Jan. 1st, 9:30 AM to 8:00 PM.

Salem Hospital Begins Valet Parking Service Monday

The valet parking service is beginning about a month before the hospital begins demolition of the patient-visitor parking structure in order to build a 21st century hospital
(SALEM) -
Beginning Monday, Salem Hospital Regional Health Services will launch its new valet parking service.
Available to both patients and visitors, the free service will run from 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM, Monday through Friday.
Valet stops will be located at the front entrance of Salem Hospital at 665 Winter Street SE, and the Center for Outpatient Medicine at 875 Oak Street SE.
"Valet parking also eliminates that all too frustrating 'Now, where did I park?' moment that we've all experienced," says Raskin.
