The U.S. is struggling to effectively address issues like Social Security, immigration and health care because the government’s solution so far has been to “kick the can down the road in hopes the problem will solve itself.”

Paul Krugman and the Great Depression 2.0
Glen Bledsoe Salem-News.com
Mr. Krugman and his cohorts at Princeton had speculated in the early years of the decade about just such a situation. He, in fact, wrote a book called The Return of Depression Economics -- now revised and reprinted as The Return of Depression Economics and the Crisis of 2008, but he didn't expect it to become reality. Nobody did.
(SALEM, Ore.) -
I'm a cartoonist not a reporter, but when Bonnie King, publisher of Salem-News.com, asked me if I would be interested in covering Paul Krugman's visit to Willamette University Friday, I decided I could fake it.
I've been reading Mr. Krugman's column in the New York Times online for about nine years so I was familiar with his writing. I'm a liberal, and he's a liberal. Works out real nice. If he has an opinion about something I do, too.

Water for Life Campaign Spreads to Willamette Valley Churches
Salem-News.com
“If we want democracy and political stability around the world, the first thing we need to ensure is that people are not thirsty” - Professor Susan Smith
(SALEM, Ore.) -
For many people, Lent means going without for a few weeks, but for 2 billion people, going without is a way of life. Willamette University Professor Susan Smith is helping address the imbalance.
Three years ago the environmental law professor established the Water for Life campaign in the Willamette Valley. She asked members of her church congregation to give up soda and lattes during Lent, drink water instead, and send the savings overseas to an “adopted” village to help provide water.
“Every 15 seconds a child dies from a disease that would have been preventable with clean drinking water,” said Smith, who provides pro bono legal expertise to the World Council of Churches about water as an inalienable right.

New Book by Willamette Professor Chronicles Unusual Presidential Tales
Salem-News.com
Professor Richard Ellis is the Mark O. Hatfield Professor of Politics at Willamette University.
(SALEM, Ore.) -
No sitting president has visited Salem, Oregon, since Harry Truman in 1948. In contrast, between 1880 and 1923 six presidents came through Salem. The transportation revolution enabled Americans to travel farther and faster than ever before, so why did it result in presidents seeing less, rather than more, of their fellow citizens?
These and other puzzles in the history of presidential travel are explored in Presidential Travel: The Journey from George Washington to George W. Bush, a new book by Willamette University Professor Richard Ellis.
