(SALEM, Ore.) - When the first Salem Hoopla event launched in 1999, the organizers weren’t sure whether the idea would catch on with the public. Now, twenty years later, it’s hard to imagine summer in Salem without the annual celebration taking to the streets.

Some of the children who attended that first event are now adults, and they brought their own children along to take part in the fun when it kicked off again last week.

Two Deputies Shot by Theft Suspect Near Hagg Lake

The suspect surrendered to deputies after sustaining gunshot wounds.

(WASHINGTON COUNTY, Ore.) - Deputies responded to a theft of a long gun at a residence on SW Scoggins Valley Rd in Gaston. It was reported that the suspect was last seen going into the woods.

While TNT members were looking for the suspect, he began shooting at them. Two deputies were shot by the suspect and multiple TNT members returned fire, injuring the suspect.

Fatal Boom-Lift Accident Kills Two Arborists

Attempts at CPR were unsuccessful.

(HAPPY VALLEY, Ore.) - Two arborists were killed today in a boom-lift accident that occurred while the arborists were helping take down shades strung over the grounds at the Pickathon music festival, at Pendarvis Farm in Happy Valley.

The arborists were approximately 40 feet in the air when the boom lift they were on tilted and fell.

Bayard Sentenced to 75 Months in Prison for Causing Deadly Crash

The drunk driver had a blood alcohol level of 0.77% nearly three hours after the fatal crash.

(HILLSBORO, Ore.) - Roger James Bayard pleaded guilty July 26th to second-degree manslaughter, fourth-degree assault with an injury and driving under the influence of intoxicants, as a result of a fatal crash he caused while he was drunk.

Oregon`s Milepost 97 Fire Now 75% Contained

The fire size is unchanged and stands at 13,119 acres.

(CANYONVILLE, Ore.) - The fire had complexities: multiple land ownership including private, state, federal and tribal trust lands; a major power line and natural gas pipeline dissecting the middle of the fire area; a major interstate freeway (I-5) lining the eastern edge of the fire; and three communities directly in the path of the fire.

This was the first large fire of Oregon’s young 2019 fire season.

Suspicious Package Found Outside Recruiting Station in Salem

(SALEM, Ore.) - At just after 9:00 Tuesday morning, deputies received a report of a suspicious package found outside of military recruitment offices in the 3000 block of Lancaster Drive NE.

When deputies arrived at the scene they located a small cardboard box with a note attached to it.

(SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.) - I am saddened at the killing on July 28, 2019, of 6-year old Stephen Romero, 13-year old Kayla Salazar, and 25-year old Trevor Irby, and the wounding 12 others at the annual Gilroy Garlic Festival by a 19-year old Gilroy, California native using an AK-47 type semiautomatic assault weapon.

The killer was killed by police.
