A war of emerging technologies has been fought on our nation's highways for years. After police began using radar guns to catch speed limit violators, companies answered the call by offering radar detectors and "Fuzz Busters." New radar bands and types are greeted by new and improved devices that utilize new ways to warn drivers and keep them from that inevitable, expensive ticket written on the side of the road.
Police used to always drive marked police vehicles, today they drive non marked cars for traffic enforcement in many cases, blurring the lines between real police and potential police impersonators. Police used to have to keep their vehicle's lights on when parked on the side of the road at night. Today all over Oregon, police sit hidden in the dark waiting for potential violators.

(DAYTON, Ore.) -
Police say one person was killed and another seriously injured in a three-vehicle fatal traffic crash Tuesday evening on Highway 221 north of Salem. Troopers are still seeking contact with two occupants of a third vehicle who reportedly walked away from the scene before they could be identified.
Oregon State Police Sergeant Dale Young says that at approximately 7:07 PM, a green 1997 Ford Escort four-door driven by 50-year old September Marie Hawks of southeast Salem, was northbound on Highway 221 near milepost 12 when it attempted to pass a vehicle in a no passing zone.

Oregon State Police say a Bend-area man is lucky to be alive after a deer crashed through the windshield of his car Tuesday on Highway 97 north of the Deschutes Junction.
Sergeant Eric Brown with OSP says that just after 7:30 PM, a 1992 Subaru station wagon driven by 37-year old Jeremy Pollard of Bend, was southbound on Highway 97 just north of Deschutes Junction when a deer ran into the path of his vehicle.

Police say one lane of northbound Interstate 5 was temporarily closed today around noon after a distraught woman reportedly jumped from a freeway overpass in Talent. The lane was closed less than 30 minutes and the woman received non-life threatening injuries.
According to Oregon State Police Senior Trooper William Matson, today at approximately 11:55 AM a 35-year old Talent-area woman jumped from the Talent overpass near the northbound lanes of Interstate 5 and exit 21.

Salem-News.comThe national average for regular unleaded has set record highs on 26 of the past 27 days, but now seems to be stalling at just under $4 per gallon. Here in Oregon, we have crossed the $4 threshold, and, in fact, all of our measured areas are several cents above that mark.

Gas prices have traditionally peaked just before Memorial Day and then have gradually declined over the summer. This year is likely to be different.
"Monday's average was the same as Sunday's, which was the first time since May 7th that the price didn't go up overnight." Marie Dodds with AAA said.

(SPRINGFIELD, Ore.) -
Over 100 motorcycle riders showed up this week to pay their respects to a couple that died as a result of a car versus motorcycle crash on the Oregon coast May 17th.
The man riding the bike, Robert Ellis Shimp, was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was 63-years old. Robert survived for several days but ultimately died as a result of injuries sustained in the crash. His wife, Nancy Ann Shimp who was 75, died at the scene.

Police say two people died and one was seriously injured early this morning in a single vehicle crash on Highway 224 about thirty miles east of Estacada. The names of the three occupants are withheld pending positive identification and next of kin notifications.
Oregon State Police Sergeant Fred Testa says that around 5:53 AM, a report was received of a single vehicle crash on Highway 224 in the Ripplebrook area near milepost 49.
