‘Nobody writes anymore these days’ is a saying you may hear often, but it seems like the days of pen pal letters are far from over. St. Helens navy apprentice, Elsen White, recently visited his old school to meet students who had been his pen pals during his deployment in Japan.
The magic began when St. Helen’s teacher Jennifer Ranger had a brilliant idea to encourage her sixth grade class, who were learning about Japan, to take pen to paper.

Darkness, close proximity to trees, and updrafts from the steep terrain made the hoisting operating difficult. The Coast Guard helicopter burned significant fuel while expertly hovering above the responders.
After hoisting the man, the aircrew advised SAR personnel they did not have enough fuel for another hoisting operation for the rescue swimmer. The rescue swimmer hiked out with the SAR personnel

The highway is open, but you should expect lane closures and delays
(CORVALLIS, Ore. ) -
Crews began removing debris, clearing culverts and rebuilding shoulders today on OR 34, Corvallis-Lebanon Highway, between Colorado Lake Drive and Peoria Road.
Flood waters closed the road between Tuesday night and Friday morning. As of April 13, an eastbound lane remained closed at the OR 34 Bypass and the Bypass was closed between OR 99W and OR 34. Single lane closures should be expected for at least two weeks.

April 7, 2019, marked the 25th anniversary of what we now know as the 1994 Rwandan Genocide.
It was just one episode in the 20th century Hutu-Tutsi conflict in that part of the world, from the slaughter of 80,000 to 200,000 Hutus by the Tutsi army in Burundi in 1972, to the 1994 Rwandan Genocide of more than 800,000 to 1 million Rwandans — both Tutsis and Hutus — in just 100 days.
