The birth of the 21st century has changed the human rights mechanisms within the UN.

(COLOMBO, Sri Lanka) - Ghandi During my University time, I supported the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa, which was an important issue during the 70s and 80s.

My involvement on human rights in Sri Lanka started during the time of widespread disappearances in the South, of Singhalese youth summarily executed in their tens of thousands in the late 80s.

Sri Lanka`s Shavendra Silva Removed from UN Group

Silva was a top military commander.

(GENEVA) - Shavendra Silva Sri Lanka’s deputy U.N. ambassador has been dropped from a group advising the Secretary-General on payment to troops participating in peacekeeping operations.

According to the report, Louise Frechette, said she had advised Major General Shavendra Silva “that his participation is not appropriate or helpful.”

Oregon Congressional Delegation Calls For Expedited Federal Disaster Declaration

White House declaration crucial for aid to Oregon counties hardest hit by January storms

(WASHINGTON DC) - President Barack Obama Today, the entire Oregon congressional delegation wrote to request that President Obama expedite approval of a federal disaster declaration to help communities recover from damage inflicted by severe winter storms.

The declaration, first requested in a February 16 letter from Governor John Kitzhaber to President Obama, was followed up by today’s bipartisan letter to the President.

SWIFT Pressured to Ban Iran Over Nuclear Ambitions

There is the possibility that Saudi Arabia could make up for some, but not all, of the banned Iranian oil.

(SAN FRANCISCO) - SWIFT is the financial equivalent of the United Nations. Under pressure from the United States and the European Union, the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication in Belgium, is expected to ban Iran's forty banks and institutions from using SWIFT to process its financial transactions.

This would effect Iran's foreign trade and access to international payments.

In confirming the death of Marie Colvin, the Sunday Times editor said: "an extraordinary figure, driven by passion to cover wars".
