PCC`s Senior Studies Institute: Having Fun and Turning 20

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - members of Portland Community College Senior Studies Institute It's laughter, lively discussions and lots of learning. What is it? It's the Senior Studies Institute at Portland Community College and its turning 20 years old this year.

At the Lake Oswego Parks and Recreation District Building and five other locations around Portland, the institute is giving retirees a path to lifelong learning. On a day in early September, about two-dozen senior citizens gathered in one of the old Safeco Insurance Building's classrooms on Kruse Way to chat about current events. In these classes, there's food, social networking, exchange of ideas and plenty of learning. Through offerings like this one, SSI gives attendees a social network and a way to continue their education.

Third Suspect Arrested in Oakridge Home Invasion Robbery Identified

(EUGENE, Ore.) - Wayne Thomas New dmv photo The third of three suspects sought following a reported home invasion robbery in Oakridge and subsequent attempt to elude in a vehicle and on foot was arrested Sunday afternoon following release from an area hospital.

All three suspects are now lodged in the Lane County Jail after their arrests late Friday night near Vida. The investigation is continuing.

However, over the last two days increasingly positive communications with Egyptian officials gives us reason to be optimistic and the final manifest of vehicles and convoy members has been requested and received by the Egyptian Government in Cairo. We now await final approval.

Segregation of Jews and Arabs in 2010 Israel is Almost Absolute

For those of us who live here, it is something we take for granted. But visitors from abroad cannot believe their eyes.

(TEL AVIV) - More than 50 years after the U.S. Civil Rights era, Israel is maintaining the exact same laws toward Arabs, that America maintained toward blacks. Under the guise of the deceptively mundane name "Amendment to the Cooperative Associations Bill," the Knesset's Constitution, Law and Justice Committee this week finalized a bill intended to bypass previous rulings of the High Court of Justice.

If indeed this legislation is approved by the Knesset plenum, it will not be possible to describe it as anything other than an apartheid law.

Somalia Pirate Realities

(SALEM, Ore.) - Somali pirates The group Ecoterra Int. that monitors pirate activity out of Nairobi, said that as of Friday night, at least 29, possibly 30 foreign vessels plus one barge, are in the hands of Somali pirates, being held against the will of their owners.

Along with the various ships, at least 519 hostages or captives - including an elderly British yachting couple and 5 new hostages from Somaliland are being held against thelr will by pirates, awaiting their eventual release.
