Blood Test Phobia Recalls Being Bullied as a Youth

Presumably many of our readers have had their own negative experiences that we can term mini-traumas. Hard stuff to simply dismiss.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Blood test phobia This past week I was once again made to submit to a blood test at my local clinic. It was not a pretty sight, but I endured. Seeing blood has made me squeamish for most of my lifetime, but why?

It was initially rooted in my distant childhood. Yours truly was short of stature as a kid, and neighborhood bullies loved to pick on me.

Fire Update for the Detroit and Sweet Home Ranger Districts

Visitors may continue to experience increased fire traffic on forest roads.

(DETROIT, Ore.) - Scott Mountain Fire Firefighters on the Detroit and Sweet Home Ranger Districts are mopping up the remains of 49 fires that were started by lightning on August 17th. A majority of the fires are either out or in patrol status. Crews will continue to monitor the fires for several weeks.

“The Type 3 incident management team that was brought in to manage the lightning complex for our Districts provided an outstanding service by keeping the fires small and minimizing impacts to recreationists and forest resources,” said Grady McMahan, District Ranger for the Detroit Ranger District.

Two Vietnam War helicopter crewmen; a pilot and a crew chief, locate each other 44 years later.

(MANAKAEKIN, NJ / SALEM, Ore.) - Stanley Perry and John Van Blarcom in Vietnam This is a true story about an Officer and a Gentleman from Salem, Oregon.

Forty four years ago, in 1966, two very young men crossed paths half way around the world in Phu Loi, Vietnam. Both were in the U.S. Army, members of the 116th AHC (Assault Helicopter Company).

I was a Huey crew chief and Warrant Officer Stanley Perry was a pilot. We flew many missions together during the year and have a lot of stories to tell, but the story I want to tell took place last week.

CBP Officers Seize 2,520 Pounds of Marijuana in 3 Separate Attempts

CBP officers turned over the custody of the two individuals to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents

(San Diego, Calif) - Marijuana Filled Tire U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the Otay Mesa Cargo port of entry intercepted three narcotic smuggling attempts this Monday.

The first seizure occurred at about 11:30 a.m., when a CBP officer referred a 26-year-old Mexican citizen driving a 1991 Freightliner Tractor to the secondary examination area for further inspection.

Amnesty International has called on the Burundian government to ensure future compliance of the SNR and other officials with international human rights law and Burundian law.

Oil Pipeline Giant Letter Threatens Landowners

Staying Hooked on a Dirty Fuel: Why Canadian Tar Sands are a Bad Bet for the United States

(Washington, DC) - oil covered bird TransCanada will force landowners to surrender their property if they do not accept the dangerous “Keystone XL” oil pipeline on their land, according to a letter obtained by National Wildlife Federation. While the massive 2,000 mile pipeline has yet to be approved by the federal government, they are invoking a Nebraska statute to ensure rapid construction.

Environmental groups are warning the pipeline is almost certain to spill, and that the fuel it will carry known as tar sands is far dirtier and more polluting than conventional oil or gas.

17 Million Americans Drive Drunk Annually

To warn motorists about the dangers of drunken driving, the US government is spending about $13 million for an advertising campaign to publicize increased enforcement through the upcoming September 6 Labor Day weekend.

(TEHRAN Press TV) - Drunk driving A US government study says nearly 17 million Americans have driven a vehicle while drunk at least once within a year.

According to a 2008 survey conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), an estimated eight percent of all drivers, or 17.2 million people had driven a vehicle at least once even though they knew they were drunk.
