SHINE on Salem 150

Salem became the capital of the Oregon Territory in 1851.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Salem-News.com Beginning on January 22, 2010. Salem Heritage Network will begin highlighting each of the 150 years of Salem’s municipal history, one year each day, continuing for 150 days.

Each day’s feature will be headed by the year, followed by a notation of two or three important world events of that year.

Veterans: Banished and Betrayed

Harsh new measures have now snared immigrants who spilled their blood for our country.

(SAN DIEGO) - Banished veterans “Banished veterans." The phrase shouldn't make sense. Someone joins the military, fights in a war, returns home, and then is banished? Thankfully, this can't happen here...

But it is happening here. Thousands of men and women who have risked their lives in the country's wars have been deported or are living under the threat of deportation because they committed non-violent crimes that often wouldn't warrant serving jail time.

Such is the slavery of ignorance, the disease that King worked to cure in his society.

(EUGENE, Ore.) - Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr On this national holiday we have an opportunity to honor the memory of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. It is not sufficient to honor a great individual simply by placing their name on a calendar, or by closing a few offices for the day.

In order to honor a great individual it is necessary to listen to their words, and try to understand what made them exemplary. MLK was a preacher, a teacher, and a healer. He sought to cure people of a disease by teaching them the truth about themselves and their society.

Florida Power and Light Billion-Dollar Rate Hike Denied

Does this signal a death knell for nuclear power?

(CHICAGO) - Nuclear power The Florida Public Service Commission (PUC) denied Florida Power and Light (FPL) Company's $1.27 billion rate-hike request, granting instead a minuscule $75.5 million in a decision that could be the death knell for not only two proposed nuclear reactors in Florida, but several elsewhere in the U.S.

While the economic downturn certainly played a role in lowering demand for the additional power in Florida, many of FPL's demands for advance payments, higher guaranteed profit margin, and less public scrutiny in constructing nuclear plants were beyond the level of outrageous even the Florida PUC would tolerate.

UN Secretary-General Mourns Deaths of Top UN Officials in Haiti Quake

UN officials lost their lives in the devastating 7.0 magnitude tremors on Tuesday.

(PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti) - Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in Haiti Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon paid tribute to the top United Nations officials who perished in the catastrophic earthquake which struck Haiti on Tuesday.

“In every sense of the word, they gave their lives for peace,” Ban said.
