Oregon`s Governor Advises Against Partying and Driving

Over the past 5 years during the holidays, 14 people died in crashes and half of those were alcohol-involved crashes.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Members of the Governor’s Advisory Committee on DUII are reminding motorists this holiday season about the dangers of driving under the influence, which includes alcohol and other impairing drugs, such as cannabis (marijuana).

“Impaired driving is completely preventable,” said Chuck Hayes, chair of the Governor’s Advisory Committee on DUII.

Winter Weather Message: Freezing Rain Advisory

Many roads, sidewalks and bike paths will be slick.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - A Freezing Rain Advisory is now in effect until 7 a.m. Friday for the Central Willamette Valley including the cities of Salem and McMinnville, according to the National Weather Service.

Periods of freezing rain or freezing drizzle will cause travel difficulties. Be prepared for slippery roads. Slow down and use caution while driving.

Thursday Morning Fatal Crash on Hwy 99W near Adair

The crash resulted in the death of a 40-year old Corvallis woman.

(BENTON COUNTY, Ore.) - At about 8:15 a.m., on Thursday, December 8, 2016, 40-year old Laura Leong, from Corvallis, Oregon, was driving southbound on Highway 99W, south of NE Crane Lane, in a 2001 Toyota Corolla Coupe.

The highway was covered in a layer of ice. The Toyota began to fishtail in the lane, crossing the center line, and collided with a northbound 2016 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup.

Winter Storm Warning for NW Oregon

This is the strongest storm of this type in quite a while.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - An unusually strong winter storm will bring mixed precipitation across much of Southwest Washington and Northwest Oregon that will have significant impacts spreading North over the area Thursday.

A Winter Storm Warning means significant amounts of snow, sleet and ice are expected or occurring. Strong winds are also possible. This will make travel very hazardous or impossible.

Snow Expected on the Valley Floor Monday Morning

1 to 3 inches above 500 feet, with a trace to less than an inch below 500 feet is expected.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Snow levels may drop down to close to the valley floors late tonight and Monday morning. Accumulations at the valley floors will be highly dependent on how fast roads cool off and the snow begins to stick, according to the National Weather service.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 4 a.m. to 1 p.m. for the Central Willamette Valley, including the cities of Salem and McMinnville, and those in the vicinity.

Standing Rock Sioux Tribe`s Statement on U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Decision to Not Grant Easement

“Today, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced that it will not be granting the easement to cross Lake Oahe for the proposed Dakota Access Pipeline. Instead, the Corps will be undertaking an environmental impact statement to look at possible alternative routes...."

Thousands of U.S. Veterans have boots on the ground at the Standing Rock Protest, many more than expected. Tim King, former editor of Salem-News.com, is there and heard the announcement. It looks like the AMERICANS have won, after all.

More Snow Coming to the Oregon Cascades

Carry chains as well as extra provisions should you travel through the Cascades this weekend.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Snow amounts could reach 8 - 15 inches at higher elevations such as at Timberline ski resort and at Mount Hood meadows. Amounts at the passes through the Cascades could reach 4 - 8 inches.

The period of the heaviest snow in the south Washington Cascades will be from midnight Saturday night until noon Sunday.

Oregon Switches Gears to Revive Cannabis Industry

The OHA says the temporary rules provide relief for the industry while maintaining "public health protection".

(SALEM, Ore.) - The outcry has apparently been heard. The Oregon Health Authority (OHA) announced today it is modifying testing standards for medical and recreational marijuana products with new, temporary rules.

According to those most affected, testing costs have driven up consumer prices, created product shortages, and caused some processors to actually cease operations (temporarily) and furlough employees just as the holidays are upon us.
