Police in Salem say the Plaid Pantry Store at 3105 River Road South, was robbed this morning about 2:00 a.m. by two suspects, one of which was armed with a long gun.

The ideal solution is that food banks should be totally funded by government. That way the costs are spread across society and no one free rides.

I remember when the first food banks were set up in the early 1980s in response to the declining economic conditions. They were supposed to be a temporary measure. Now they’re everywhere.
There are now huge numbers of homeless people—including families with children. In Calgary last spring, an overnight census was done with over 4,000 homeless people counted. But everyone knows the number is higher, perhaps much higher. It’s no different in other large cities across North America.

As a grizzled World War II Combat Infantry Veteran, I reminisce about both June 6, 1944 and the meaning of Memorial Day. It seems providential that they are only days apart.
In 1940 etcetera, I didn’t have a thought in my mind about being shot at with artillery, mortars, air strafing or bombs. WW II was 6000 miles away but I did help build an Air Base in Alaska and the Swan Island Shipyard in Portland.

Oregon Military Department Braces for Lean Budget Years

The cuts could include service, support and operations reductions, four armory closures, and elimination of state personnel positions.

In light of legislative budget proposals for the 2009-2011 biennium, the Oregon Military Department is reviewing cuts it would have to make as the state budget may decrease in the years ahead.
The Joint Committee on Ways and Means proposed a cut to the OMD budget for more than $4.7 million, which is approximately 16.8% of the essential budget level.

Fire Damages Hillsboro Gas Station Building (VIDEO)

The fire produced such thick black smoke outside that at least two neighboring businesses chose to temporarily close and evacuated their buildings.
(HILLSBORO, Ore.) -
A one-alarm fire caused an estimated 60-thousand dollars in damage to the building housing the Airport 76 Gas and Market at 1729 NE Cornell Road Thursday.
Storm Smith with Hillsboro Fire and Rescue, says two residents of an apartment complex behind the gas station ran into the facility to report the fire to the employees inside. All employees and customers of the store escaped unharmed.
