National Geographic Partners with Oregon and Washington to Launch Geotourism Project for Central Cascades‏

A 2002 study shows more than 55 million adults in the U.S. could be described as "geotourists," who travel to enjoy the distinctive character of places and want them to stay appealing.

(WASHINGTON D.C.) - National Geographic logo National Geographic Society's Center for Sustainable Destinations has joined organizations in Washington and Oregon to publicize the world-class natural and cultural attractions of the Central Cascades.

The pilot project seeks to contribute to the economic health of communities by promoting geotourism: tourism that sustains and enhances the geographical character of a place — its environment, culture, aesthetics, heritage and the well-being of its residents.

A community-based nomination process launched today will be used to create a National Geographic "Geotourism MapGuide" for the region.

Amnesty International Cites Growing Call to Investigate Gaza Conflict

The group says there is a large need for accountability that does not presently exist.

(GAZA) - Unrest at Gaza As evidence of war crimes and crimes against humanity mounts daily in Gaza, there are growing calls for an investigation into the conduct of all parties to the conflict.

Amnesty International has urged all parties to the Gaza conflict, as well as the international community, to ensure that a thorough, independent and impartial investigation is established without delay into abuses of international human rights and humanitarian law, and to ensure full accountability.

These include Israeli attacks that have been directed at civilians or civilian buildings in the Gaza Strip, or which are disproportionate, and Palestinian armed groups' indiscriminate rocket attacks into civilian population centres in southern Israel.

More Rockets Fired Into Israel From Lebanon Despite UN`s Call for Ceasefire

A patrol on a search operation near El Hebbariye discovered three live rockets prepared for launch and deactivated them on the spot.

(GAZA) - UNIFIL on patrol in southern Lebanon The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon reported that several rockets were fired at Israel from Lebanese territory today, with Israeli forces returning fire, despite calls for restraint from Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and others after a similar incident last week.

There were no immediate claims of responsibility for the rockets fired from Lebanon, according to UNIFIL.

There were also no reports of damage or injuries from the firing or from the two rounds of artillery Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) fired in return, the Force said.

Sketch Of Suspect‏ in Home Invasion Robbery Released

The suspect is described as a white, male adult 18-20 years of age, six feet to six foot two, with short light brown hair.

(CLACKAMAS, Ore.) - A woman was assaulted by a man with a shotgun today after entering her home just steps ahead of her father.

The 8:45 AM armed residential robbery was reported to the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office.

This event occurred at the address on SE Maple Street, in the Oak Grove area of Milwaukie. Detective Jim Strovink with the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office, says the adult female occupant at this address had just returned home to her residence after transporting her child to school.

Ricardo Montalbán Dies in Los Angeles at 88

Ricardo Montalbán appeared in a wide variety of movies including The Naked Gun as well as two films from both the Planet of the Apes and Spy Kids series.

(LOS ANGELES) - Ricardo Gonzalo Pedro Montalbán Merino, better known simply as "Ricardo Montalbán", died today, January 14th 2009, in Los Angeles. He was 88 years old.

His cause of death has not been confirmed, he has reportedly been confined to a wheelchair in recent years, suffering near constant pain from a congenital condition that affected his spine.

Ricardo Montalbán, born November 25th 1920, was a well known Mexican television, theatre, and film actor. His career spanned decades and he will always be known for his role as Mr. Rourke on the television "Fantasy Island" which he played from 1978 until 1984.

(IRVINE, Calif.) - El Toro Marine Air Station A Salem-News.com series that began May 1st 2007 about deadly toxic contamination at the now-closed El Toro Marine Corps Air Station in Orange County, California, seemed like unwelcome news at the time to City of Irvine officials and also the public representative for the Irvine Ranch Water District.

Loose lips do sink ships, but so do plenty of other things. The ship in this case, was a huge development project planned by Lenar Homes that would have turned the dangerously polluted base into an upper end housing community and public park.

Construction ground to a halt and the base is now being used to store automobiles.

Democrats in Congress Pick Bush Over Human Rights Groups; Supporting Israeli War Crimes in Gaza

Congressional leaders are advancing a radical view of international law that would allow powerful countries to get away with wanton war crimes.

(SAN FRANCISCO) - Israel`s handiwork on the Gaza Strip In a direct challenge to the credibility of Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, the International Red Cross and other reputable humanitarian organizations, an overwhelming bipartisan majority in both houses of Congress has gone on record supporting President George W. Bush's position that the Israeli armed forces bear no responsibility for the large and growing numbers of civilian casualties from their assault on the Gaza Strip.

As of this writing, at least 400 civilians have been killed by Israeli forces, primarily using U.S.-supplied weaponry.
