FBI Releases Preliminary 2008 Oregon and Washington Crime Stats

Salem saw decreases in rapes, robberies, and aggravated assaults, but also an increase in Murders and burglaries.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Police badge and ID Today, the FBI released a preliminary report detailing January - June 2008 crime data based on the submissions of 11,515 law enforcement agencies in the U.S. Each of these agencies had to submit data to the Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program for January through June of both 2007 and 2008.

Man Dies Outside Eugene-area Hospital‏ From Brain Injury, After Being Discharged

The man had been arrested after a hit and run crash.

(EUGENE, Ore.) - Death investigation Oregon State Police say thay were notified by the Lane County Deputy Medical Examiner that a Seattle, Washington man arrested last Tuesday following a hit and run crash on Interstate 5 near Eugene died at an area hospital.

Following the man's arrest and follow up investigative evaluation, OSP had taken him that day to the hospital for a medical evaluation and last had contact with him after issuing citations on several charges.

According to Lane County Deputy Medical Examiner Frank Ratti, 40-year Jason Cord Menk of Seattle, was released from Sacred Heart Hospital University District following a medical evaluation.

DEA Rejects Judge`s Ruling, Quashes Medical Marijuana Research Project

(WASHINGTON D.C.) - Judge`s gavel In a major setback to medical marijuana research, the Drug Enforcement Administration has rejected the decision of Administrative Law Judge Mary Ellen Bittner and blocked a medical marijuana research project at the University of Massachusetts Amherst -- a project considered vital if marijuana is ever to be an FDA-approved medicine.

The DEA's ruling, dated January 7th, was only released today.

"It's no surprise that an administration that has rejected science again and again has, as one of its final acts, blocked a critical research project," said Aaron Houston, director of government relations for the Marijuana Policy Project in Washington, D.C.

Obama Economic Advisor Addresses the American Recovery and Reinvestment Plan`s Job Impact (VIDEO)

The bottom line is that recovering from the last 8 years is going to be tough, and without Obama's plan, it would be even harder on America.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - Salem-News.com Christina Romer, the future head of the Council of Economic Advisers, along with the next vice president’s chief economist, Jared Bernstein, released estimates Saturday of what the Obama economic plan would accomplish.

A New York Times Op-Ed by Columnist Paul Krugman, calls the report "reasonable and intellectually honest, which is a welcome change from the fuzzy math of the last eight years."

But the report makes it clear that the real needs of the economy can not be met with this plan.

Oregon Air Guard Ceremony Marks Command Chief Retirement and Replacement

The Oregon Air Guard Has its own changing of the Guard in Salem.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Oregon Air Guard`s Mark D. Russell, (right), receives  command flag from Bruce W. Prunk The Oregon Air National Guard said goodbye to its former command chief master sergeant, and welcomed his replacement during separate ceremonies held at the Anderson Readiness Center in Salem, Oregon, on January 11th.

State Command Chief Master Sgt. Mark D. Russell assumed command of the state's highest enlisted position from outgoing State Command Chief Master Sgt. Rodney R. Smith in a morning ceremony attended by family, friends and coworkers.

Fate of Ukrainian Ship Captured by Pirates Hangs in the Balance

Problems with Russia, the Ukraine's economy and heating sources are allowing the pirate occupied vessel to languish.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Hijacked MV Faina Seen from the USS Vella Gulf. Over three and a half months have passed since Somali pirates overtook the Ukrainian vessel MV Faina off the coast of this African country.

The group ECOTERRA Intl., says information received from the Faina indicates that things are not going well and most communications are still coming from sideline negotiators and informers rather than from the real sources.

As the fate of the Ukrainian ship hangs in the balance, Russia has sent six warships to participate in a joint naval exercise with the Indian navy this month, the chief of the Russian General Staff said on Sunday. The Russian ships are led by the Pyotr Veliky, a nuclear-powered missile cruiser.

Coast Guard Rescues Surfers in Newport, Oregon (VIDEO)

The names of the surfers were not immediately available.

(SEATTLE) - Oregon`s Yaquina Head Coast Guard officials say a man and a girl were hoisted from the rocks at Yaquina Head, Oregon, Sunday by one of their helicopter crews.

The Coast Guard Group/Air Station North Bend, Oregon, was contacted by Lincoln County dispatch at 2:32 PM and advised that three surfers were trapped on the rocks at Agate Beach near Yaquina Head.

The Coast Guard says crews from their stations at Depoe Bay and Yaquina Bay launched two 47-foot boat crews while an HH-65 crew from Coast Guard Air Facility at Newport was diverted to the scene.

Senate Set to Pass Public Lands Bill

Legislation includes Seven Wyden-authored provisions to protect Oregon Wilderness and endangered species.

(WASHINGTON D.C.) - Proposed Deerfield-BLM Property Line Adjustment Seven public lands bills authored by U.S. Senator Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) moved a step closer to becoming law today today as the Omnibus Public Land Management Act of 2009 (S.22) received more than the necessary 60 votes for cloture.

“The Lewis and Clark Mount Hood Wilderness Act of 2007” and “The Copper Salmon Wilderness Act,” and several others had each passed the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee prior to the end of the 110th Congress but were blocked by U.S. Senator Tom Coburn (R-Okla.).

Today’s vote overrides Senator Coburn’s efforts to block the Senate from voting on the legislation. The Senate can now move toward final passage of the bill as early as tomorrow.
