Memories of the El Toro Marine Air Base: a Modern Day Ghost Town

This feature is part of a series report on contamination at the El Toro Marine base; it includes a special slideshow presentation.

(IRVINE, Calif.) - Salem-News.com The sound of afterburners from fighter jets soaring into the California sky over the El Toro Marine Corps Air Station have been silent for almost a decade. They are replaced by an eerie silence that envelopes the looming buildings and hangars.

I have many memories of my time as a Marine at this place and they have been flooding back over the last several days as I've spent time here investigating a massive hazardous waste situation created when the Marines dumped massive amounts of TCE- Trichloroethylene, into the groundwater. Contact with the potent chemical degreaser can quickly turn fatal.

Alliance vs. Friendship

A focus on faith and religion from a Salem-News.com writer who was raised during the Great Depression.

(PASO ROBLES, Calif.) - The definitions are important in understanding the fundamental difference between how Conservatives and Liberals view the world.

An alliance is an association of groups, people, or nations who agree to cooperate to achieve a common goal. [the key words are “agree to cooperate”]. They don’t always.

Friendship is a relationship between people, organizations, or countries that is characterized by mutual assistance, approval, and support [the key word here is “characterized”]. Friends don’t let friends drive drunk, for example.

de la Rocha Rages on With New Album

A band that shocks and rocks, Rage Against the Machine, sees band members launch a new album; "One Day as a Lion."

(LOS ANGELES, Calif.) - Zach de la Rocha With all the political tension gripping this nation, it seems only right that the voice of Rage Against the Machine would emerge with a new album release. There is not a voice in the rock world that takes on Zack de la Rocha when it comes to world politics.

But this is not Rage Against the Machine; this is One Day As A Lion. The band has an unmistakable sound but that stands to reason with de la Rocha's vocals. My understanding via a Los Angeles DJ, is that there was graffiti sprayed and later photographed in LA that read, "It is better to live one day as a lion, than a thousand days as a lamb." I can appreciate it.

Autism, Michael Savage and Dolthood

Phillip Leveque has spent his life as a Combat Infantryman, Physician and Toxicologist.

(MOLALLA, Ore.) - Salem-News.com When I heard this dolt pontificating on television news that Autism was the result of bad parenting, I nearly threw-up. This totally absurd ranting was settled more than 50 years ago. Dr. Lendon Smith, a prominent pediatrician in Portland, Oregon, discovered that low doses of amphetamines helped many autistic patients. Subsequent research indicated that Butyrophenones and Ritalin helped aggressive states but parents are still praying for some relief for these "children from hell".

Behavioral therapy helps some but a friend of mine whose son was autistic, and reasonably controllable until he became six foot tall at 200 pounds, still had explosive, uncontrolled fits which ultimately resulted in him having to be institutionalized. Please God, help his caretakers.

Torturer, Terrorist and Other Hateful Names for our Enemies

Phillip Leveque has spent his life as a Combat Infantryman, Physician and Toxicologist.

(MOLALLA, Ore.) - To Vic and Anonymous:

I was seriously berated, called a "Nazi war monger" and a "demented racist" for calling my sworn enemy a "kraut". It was easier than calling them a Nazi or National Socialist. It is much easier to deride and hate an enemy who is trying to kill a soldier and his buddies.

To call me a "racist" because of using the above appellation "kraut" is beyond ludicrous. My wife was Jewish German and a Holocaust survivor. I called her "kraut pants" as an affectionate term. My great-grandfather was a kraut. I am also part "mick", part "jock" (Scotch), part "limey" and also half frog.
