Health Officials Advise Oregonians to Avoid Heat-Related Illness

(SALEM, Ore.) - Salem area ambulance responds to a heat stroke case With record-breaking temperatures predicted for the next few days, Oregon health officials are reminding residents to take precautions against getting sick from extreme heat.
Except for a short hot spell in mid-May this is expected to be the first episode of really hot weather this year.

Forecasters predict an abrupt change to higher temperatures after an unseasonably cool spring.

Amber Alert Canceled for California Toddler

The California Highway Patrol canceled the Amber Alert on Thursday afternoon after the boy was found safe in Oakland and the suspect taken into custody.

(DUBLIN, Calif.) - The California Highway Patrol issued an Amber Alert Thursday afternoon after a boy was reportedly abducted late Wednesday night or early Thursday morning in Dublin California. The suspect was last known to be in the Oakland area. The alert is now over and the boy is safe.

List of Americans Killed in Afghanistan Passes 500

Casualties may have dropped in Iraq, but in Afghanistan the numbers in recent days have jumped significantly.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Casualties Afghanistan Fifteen Americans have died fighting in Afghanistan in the last two weeks. The number of Marines and Navy Corpsman killed in combat is extremely high. The most recent deaths involve one U.S. soldier who died in Khogyani, Afghanistan, and four who were killed in Kandahar City. Their names were released Tuesday.

Wildfires Continue to Rage Across Northern California (VIDEO)

So far, the fires have claimed 17 private homes, one commercial buildings and 19 outbuildings.

(SACRAMENTO, Calif.) - Salem-News.com Fire authorities in California say firefighters are continuing their battle against fires burning in the northern part of the nation's third-largest state. Cal Fire reports that in addition to fires and evacuations, a number of related highway closures on state highways and local roads which are closed throughout northern California due to wildfire activities.

Closures are in place for state highway 32, 36, 70, 89, 96. Delays are in place for state highway 299. It is reported that numerous county and local roads are closed as well. Travelers are advised to check with law enforcement agencies prior to traveling.

Wyden Says He Will Oppose Cloture for Wiretapping Bill

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - U.S. Senator Ron Wyden U.S. Senator Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), a senior member of the U.S. Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, announced today that he would oppose new legislation amending the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) due to his continued opposition to a provision that would grant blanket retroactive immunity to any telecommunications company that participated in the President’s warrantless wiretapping program.

"This is not the first time that the President has pressured Congress into interfering in federal court cases to cover-up his attempts to secretly rewrite the law. Congress’s previous attempts to bail-out the President—from the Detainee Treatment Act to the Military Commissions Act—have not only failed to solve the legal mess, but have often provided cover for the Administration's failed counterterrorism policies," said Wyden.

Police Say Illegal Pass Caused Death of Motorcyclist

Crash happened on Highway 221 near Hopewell Road, north of Salem.

(DAYTON, Ore.) - Police say one person was killed and another seriously injured in a three-vehicle fatal traffic crash Tuesday evening on Highway 221 north of Salem. Troopers are still seeking contact with two occupants of a third vehicle who reportedly walked away from the scene before they could be identified.

Oregon State Police Sergeant Dale Young says that at approximately 7:07 PM, a green 1997 Ford Escort four-door driven by 50-year old September Marie Hawks of southeast Salem, was northbound on Highway 221 near milepost 12 when it attempted to pass a vehicle in a no passing zone.

State Militias Join California National Guard Planes in Battling Wildfires

The Walker Fire which involved 8,600 acres is at ~5% containment.

(MATHER FIELD, Calif.) - A C-130 Hercules aircraft drops fire retardant chemicals on a wildfire.  Photo: California Air National Guard The California National Guard (CNG), with support from National Guard units from other states is currently providing six rotary aircraft and five fixed-wing aircraft to assist in extinguishing various northern California wildfires today.

Yesterday, the CNG assisted first responders with successfully containing the Napa fire with the following air assets: four UH-60 Blackhawk helicopters from Los Alamitos Joints Forces Training Base and a CH-47 from Stockton Flight Facility, which are both equipped with fire suppression devices. The CNG also provided support with one heavy expanded mobility tactical fuel truck (HEMTT), one government vehicle, and personnel to operate these vehicles.
