Local Author Recounts Journey Across Oregon in Salem

(SALEM, Ore.) - Award-winning author William L. Sullivan Award-winning author William L. Sullivan presents a slide show tour of his 1,361 mile solo backpacking trek across Oregon in the summer of 1985, as the Straub Environmental Lecture Series continues on November 29th. The program begins at 7:00 PM at Loucks Auditorium in the Salem Public Library, 585 Liberty St.

The slide show covers Sullivan’s trek from Oregon’s westernmost shore at Cape Blanco to Oregon’s easternmost point in Hell’s Canyon. His journal of the two-month adventure, Listening for Coyote, was chosen by the Oregon Cultural Heritage Commission in 2005 as one of the 100 most significant books in Oregon’s history.

Report Shows Widespread Tooth Decay in Oregon Kids

Children without dental insurance and lower-income children have poorer oral health and less access to care.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - doctor and child Every day 5,000 Oregon school children -- the equivalent of one child in every classroom throughout the state -- are in need of urgent care due to pain and infection from tooth decay. For many, their suffering will only worsen because they don't have regular access to a dentist.

The Oregon Smile Survey 2007, released last week by the Oregon Department of Human Services (DHS), contains the results of oral screenings conducted among first, second and third graders. It follows a similar study conducted five years ago.

No Injuries in Keizer School Bus Crash

(KEIZER, Ore.) - School bus Keizer Police say a crash between a school bus and a car blocked traffic today and potentially alarmed several parents in the area, but no injuries resulted from the traffic crash that involved a Salem-Keizer School District bus and a passenger vehicle.

Additional emergency personnel responded from the Keizer Fire District because this was reported as a traffic crash with possible injuries. The incident occurred in the eastbound lanes of Chemawa Road NE at the railroad tracks near Ulali Drive NE at 2:37 PM Monday.

I have worked for 40 years of my life, as a secretary and as a writer/editor. I am a college graduate. And have always been able to take care of myself. I am approaching my 58th birthday on Thanksgiving.

Shooting at Lucky Fortune in Salem Under Investigation

Police are hoping to hear from anyone who may have information on the shooting.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Shooting Investigation Salem Police say that Sunday evening at approximately 10:12 PM, 24-year old Keith Phillip Martinez was shot in the upper left leg in the parking lot of the Lucky Fortune. The Lucky Fortune is a restaurant and nightclub at 1401 Lancaster Dr NE, Salem.

Martinez was transported by medics to Salem Hospital and was later transferred to OHSU Health Science Center in Portland. The wound is not life threatening at this time.

Pope & Talbot Announces Agreement to Sell Three Sawmills to Interfor

Agreement subject to approval by U.S. Bankruptcy Court and Canadian Court allows for competing bids to be considered before sale is finalized.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Interfor mill in Canada Pope & Talbot, Inc (Pink Sheets: PTBT) today announced that it has agreed sell three sawmills and related timber tenures to International Forest Products Limited (Interfor) for roughly $69 million plus the value of certain current assets and liabilities assumed.

The three mills, located in Castlegar, British Columbia, Grand Forks, British Columbia and Spearfish, South Dakota are producers of high-quality softwood lumber products.

(SILVERTON, Ore.) - Billionaire investor Warren Buffett In a recent interview with NBC's Tom Brokaw, billionaire investor Warren Buffett disclosed the results of a voluntary survey of his employees. They reported paying an average of 32.9 percent of their income in federal payroll and income taxes last year, compared to the 17.7 percent paid by Buffett, America's second richest man.

"The taxation system has tilted toward the rich," Buffett concluded. He offered a million dollars to anyone on the Forbes 400 list of wealthiest Americans who could show they paid a higher rate than their receptionist. So far, he's had no takers.

Man`s Body Located by Searchers Near Quartzville

The cause of death is undetermined at this time pending an autopsy

(ALBANY, Ore.) - Death investigation A Sweet Home man was found dead yesterday afternoon after an overnight search led teams to the Quartzville area. Linn County Sheriff Tim Mueller says 53-year old Ricky Dean Hurse was picking mushrooms Saturday approximately three miles from Quartzville Road near the 600 line when he was reported as overdue.

"He was reported overdue by his girlfriend at approximately 11:30 PM Saturday night when he failed to return home," Mueller stated. He says deputies, members of the Linn County Sheriff's Search and Rescue Post and the Sheriff's Mounted Posse responded to the area and searched throughout the night and Sunday.

FBI Says Hate Crimes Increased in 2006

Most of the Hate Crime incidents are motivated by religion.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Hate The number of hate crimes was up slightly in Oregon and Washington for 2006 compared to 2005, according to a report released Monday by the FBI. Hate Crimes are different from conventional crimes, which are directed simply at an individual, but are meant to cause fear and intimidation to an entire group or class of people.

Beyond the general increases, one particularly disturbing trend shows that Hate Crimes connected to religion more than doubled in Oregon in 2006 when compared to the previous year, with Washington close behind.
