High Toxin Levels Found in Klamath County Water Bodies

Health advisory on Upper Klamath and Agency lakes extended downstream to Keno Dam.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - The health advisory was issued due to toxins at levels that could pose a risk to human health in Upper Klamath Lake, located just north of Klamath Falls along Highway 97 in Klamath County.

Continuous cold water conditions in Pelican Bay have prevented blue-green algae from growing there, so Pelican Bay is not included in this advisory.

USS Ashland is assigned to the Bonhomme Richard Expeditionary Strike Group and is on patrol in the U.S. 7th Fleet area of responsibility.

Backyard Chicken Ordinance Considered by Marion County Commissioners

Six hens (no roosters) would be allowed on property inside urban growth boundaries.

(SALEM, Ore.) - The Marion County Board of Commissioners will hold the first reading of an ordinance allowing backyard chickens, within urban growth boundary areas, at its regularly scheduled Board Session on Wednesday, July 29, 2015. The meeting begins at 9 a.m.

The proposed ordinance will allow up to six hens inside urban growth boundaries, except in the Woodburn and Silverton UGBs where a maximum of three hens would be allowed. There would be no sales of chickens, eggs, or fertilizer.

Bat Found in Marion County Tests Positive for Rabies

(SALEM, Ore.) - Marion County health officials are reporting that a bat found inside a home tested positive for rabies on Tuesday, July 20, 2015. The test was conducted by the Oregon State Public Health Laboratory.

This is the fifth bat in Oregon to test positive for rabies in 2015, and the first in Marion County. Last year, eleven bats and three foxes tested positive for rabies throughout Oregon, but none in Marion County. The last time a bat found in Marion County tested positive for rabies was June 2012.
