Wyden Calls Administration Plan to Abandon Tax Reform BadJudgment

Wyden and Emanuel’s bill, the “Fair Flat Tax Act of 2007,” allows every taxpayer to file taxes on a simplified, one-page 1040 form, collapses individual tax brackets from the current six down to three and sets one, flat corporate rate.

(Washington, D.C.) - U.S. Senator Ron Wyden, a member of the Senate Finance Committee, today said the Bush Administration was turning its back on millions of American taxpayers just one day after Tax Day in announcing it was abandoning much-needed reform of the nation’s confusing and special-interest heavy tax code.

News of the Administration’s decision to walk away from tax reform came during today’s Senate Finance Committee hearing at which U.S. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson – responding to questions from Wyden – stated, “There isn’t a major tax reform proposal being put forward right now, and I don’t see that on the dockets in the near future,” according to Reuters.

Grand Jury Indicts Gresham Teen Charged in Shooting Incident at Springwater High School

The situation began on April 11th when Gresham Police Officers responded to Springwater Trail High School over a reported gunshot.

(GRESHAM) - The Multnomah County Grand Jury heard testimony yesterday regarding the charges filed against 15-year old Chad Escobedo, who was arrested last Tuesday for shooting at Springwater Trail High School and injuring several students.

The Grand Jury returned a number of indictments:

These include one count of Attempted Aggravated Murder, one count of Attempted Murder, two counts of Assault in the 2nd degree, two counts of Assault in the 3rd degree, and two counts of Unlawful use of a weapon.

NBC Received Package from Virginia Tech Shooter

Documents from 2005 declare that Cho was mentally ill and an imminent danger to others.

(BLACKSBURG, Va.) - NBC News in New York received correspondence from Cho Seung-Hui about the shooting at Virginia Tech. It was revealed today that the package of information that arrived at the NBC studios through the mail includes writings and images and it is reported that it was mailed prior to, or between Monday's shootings.

The package included multiple photos, images and writings. NBC immediately contacted authorities. At this point the FBI has all of the information that NBC received, they say they are going over it.

Threat Made Against Virginia Tech President (VIDEO)

Once Cho’s identification was confirmed, Virginia Tech Police records were reviewed and it was determined that there was contact with Cho in the fall of 2005.

(BLACKSBURG, Va.) - At 7:53 AM this morning, a Virginia Tech operator received a threat against President Charles Steger.

Police officers responded to Steger’s office in Burruss Hall to make him aware of the potential threat.

The increased police presence in and around Buruss Hall led to rumors and false assumptions about what was going on, this then led to an unwarranted report of a suspicious person in Buruss Hall.

Wyden Applauds ITC Investigation into Possible Hardwood Plywood Abuses

Nearly 2,000 Oregonians work in the U.S. hardwood plywood industry, which Wyden alleges has been damaged by unfair and possibly illegal foreign trading practices.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - U.S. Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR) today announced that the U.S International Trade Commission (ITC) has formally opened an investigation “into the competitive conditions affecting the U.S. wood flooring and hardwood plywood industries.”

Wyden, a member of the Senate Finance Committee, had requested that Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus request the investigation by the ITC. Baucus did so in a February 28, 2007, letter. The ITC’s report is due by June 6th, 2008.

Two Salem Men Arrested Along Oregon Coast

63-year-old Raymond A. Pries, from Salem, interfered with the investigation by insisting he be arrested as well.

(WALDPORT, Ore.) - Lincoln County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested two Salem men early this morning in Waldport.

Lincoln County Sheriff Deputy Lance Cummings says at around 1:00 AM, he observed a 2006 Dodge pickup traveling down the center turn land for several blocks while driving east of U.S. 34 near Broadway Street in Waldport.

Cummings was able to stop the vehicle, and made contact with the driver, 56-year-old Billie Staggs from Salem.

Willamette University Names Vice President

She replaces Robin Brown who left Willamette to assume a position at the Colorado State University in Ft. Collins.

(SALEM) - Madeleine Eagon Rhyneer has been named Vice President for Admission and Financial Aid at Willamette University effective July 1st.

Rhyneer is currently the Vice President for Strategic Communications at DePauw University.

During her 11 years of service at DePauw, she held the position of Vice President for Admission and Financial Aid for nine years.

Salem Man Busted for Going 130 on I-5

The driver told the deputy that he and a friend often race to Salem to go to work.

(SALEM) - Just after 11:30 PM last night, Marion County Sheriff's Office Traffic Safety Team Deputy Shane Burnham, who was working traffic enforcement, saw a 2004 Subaru merge onto I-5 southbound at Woodburn and accelerate to a high rate of speed.

The Deputy paced the car at speeds of more than 130 miles per hour.

Once the Deputy activated the emergency lights on his patrol car the driver pulled the car over.

Virginia Tech Launches Memorial Website to Honor Shooting Victims (VIDEO)

The website is for individuals to share their condolences, thoughts, and prayers.

(BLACKSBURG, Va.) - State, local, and federal law enforcement officials continue their round-the-clock investigation of the multiple fatal shootings that took place on the Virginia Tech campus the morning of Monday, April 16th.

Within the past 24 hours, a search warrant was executed on the dorm room of Cho Seung-Hui, 23, in Harper Hall. Investigators are still determining the evidentiary value of papers and assorted items seized from the room.

In a note left in his dorm room, Cho laid out a list of grievances in which he railed against "rich kids" or "debauchery" and "deceitful charlatans" on campus.

(Earth-RNC) - For hours I stare at the Multiverse Browser until my vision blurs. I sometimes mistake a headline of our own world for one in another. Take for example the recent House Bill proposed by Representative Donna Nelson to ban human cloning. (Will she also try to ban our alternate earth counterparts?) I misread it to say "Ban on Human Clothing." At first thought she had perhaps read the previous three installments of Nota Bene: "Nude Anatomy," "The Naked Hitchhiker," and "Skin Deep" and was inspired to write legislation to reveal the beauty of the human form to one and all in our great state. But after a brief glance at the text, I saw I was mistaken.
