Cape Meares State Scenic Viewpoint to Close Temporarily on Monday

The park is expected to re-open on Thursday.

(CAPE MEARS) - Cape Meares State Scenic Viewpoint, one of the busiest day-use state parks on the north Oregon coast, will be closed Monday through Wednesday while contractors pave its parking area.

An expansion project has restricted parking in the park since Sept. 18th.

Those restrictions are expected to continue until mid-November.

(SALEM) - Willamette University Composer-In-Residence John Peel celebrates his 60th birthday with a performance of one of his works by the Salem Chamber Orchestra (SCO).

The November 18th and 19th concerts feature Peel's "Three French Texts for Voice and Chamber Orchestra." Mezzo Soprano Allison Swensen-Mitchell will join the orchestra.

Peel, a Salem resident, is a nationally and internationally known composer. His works have been performed and commissioned by major symphony orchestras including the Seattle Symphony, the Pittsburgh Symphony and the Oregon Symphony.

Sheridan Family of Five Receiving Red Cross Support After Fire Destroys Home

One family dog was lost in the blaze.

(SHERIDAN) - A Sheridan family of five are receiving Red Cross support after an overnight fire destroyed their home on SE Sheridan Road.

An observant neighbor woke the head of household shortly after the fire started at around 10:30 PM Saturday night.

It brought into view a world where stories are not whittled down into one or two-minute reports on TV news or edited to a few scant paragraphs in a newspaper.

Web news sites are the first communication platforms with little in the way of limitation.

This possibility of Web video allowed many of us to envision a world where stories include more facts and details, where enough information can be delivered to give an idea of what it was like to actually be there.

Prank Causes the Early Morning Evacuation of 340 People From the Phoenix Grand Hotel

Hundreds of sleeping guests got an early morning wake up call.

(SALEM) - Hotel guests at the Phoenix Grand Hotel in Salem were roused from their sleep early Sunday morning when the hotel's fire alarm system was activated. Guests on the second floor reported smoke in the corridor on their floor.

Salem Firefighters received the call for a commercial fire at 201 Liberty Street SE at 5:26 AM on Sunday according to Spokesman Bill Holmstrom. Hotel guests told first the arriving firefighters that the second floor was full of smoke.

Oregon State Hosting Annual Conference on Oregon Health Issues

Oregon’s Public Health Director Susan Allan will talk about the state of Oregon’s health.

(CORVALLIS) - The future health needs of Oregonians will be examined during a two-day conference “Public Health – Today and Tomorrow,” scheduled for Oct. 23-24 at Oregon State University.

Held at OSU's LaSells Stewart Center, the meeting serves as the annual conference for the Oregon Public Health Association.

The conference is co-hosted by the OSU College of Health and Human Sciences’ Department of Public Health.

(NASHVILLE, Tenn.) - On Thursday, country music singer-songwriter Sara Evans filed for divorce from her husband Craig Schelske.

The couple married in 1993.

Recent events that shed light on the status of her marriage prompted Evans to make the filing, which was registered Thursday with a court in Tennessee, where Evans resides.

93-Year Old Woman Extinguishes Kitchen Fire

Before clearing the residence, Salem firefighters installed two smoke alarms.

(SALEM) - A Salem woman's quick thinking Saturday put an end to a kitchen fire that could have been much worse. The fire happened at 925 15th Street NE just after 5:00 PM.

Salem Fire Department Spokesman Bill Holmstrom says Mary W. Earls was baking herb oil in her oven at her residence when the house suddenly began filling with smoke.

Ms. Earls went into her kitchen and discovered a fire in her oven. She first tried to extinguish the fire with salt, which didn't work. She then used a portable fire extinguisher, which knocked down the main fire.
