17 Salem-Keizer Schools Tagged With Graffiti Over The Weekend

In June, 65-hundred square feet of property in Salem had graffiti removed, of which 63 percent of it was done by gangs.

(SALEM) - Graffiti, a symbol of pride for gangs, an eye sore and a headache for the rest of us, is popping up all over Salem, Keizer and Marion County.

Schools, businesses, wood fences, county and city road signs, and park buildings, nothing so far this year is safe from taggers.

Black Crater Wildfire Subsides

As the Black Crater Conflagration burning southwest of Sisters subsides citizens returned to their homes.

(SALEM) - Structure firefighters and their equipment no longer dominate the streets of the once-evacuated subdivions of Tollgate, Crossroads and Edgington Road where 1500 people from over 600 reside.

17-Year-Old Found Dead Saturday in His Turner Home

Turner Police are seeking information.

(TURNER) - Turner Police are investigating the death of a 17-year-old boy in Turner Saturday morning. Police Chief Gary Will says 17-year-old Ernest Cave was found in his home by his parents.

Will says Turner Police are leaving no stone unturned, "We've looked into every single rumor that has surfaced because of this and so far, none of them are true."

Investigators say there were no signs of foul play at the scene and an autopsy did not reveal a cause of death.

Police are awaiting the results of a toxicology report should be completed in about two weeks. "Every death is suspicious" Chief Will said. "We just have to wait for the toxicology reports now to see what information comes forth."

Wilhelms to Return as House Speaker`s Chief of Staff

(SALEM) - House Speaker Karen Minnis (R-Wood Village) today announced that Gary Wilhelms will return as her Chief of Staff.

“I’m thrilled Gary is returning as my Chief of Staff,” Speaker Minnis said. “There are few with his depth of experience; rightfully he is well respected in and outside of the capitol.”

Wilhelms was elected to the Oregon House of Representatives in 1972 from District 53 in Klamath County and was re-elected in 1974, 1976 and 1978. After serving as a member of the Legislature, Wilhelms lobbied for several telecommunications companies.

Governor Working on Bi-Partisan Plan to Put More Troopers on Oregon Highways

The Governor’s plan would add 125 troopers and beef up crime-fighting.

(SALEM) - Governor Kulongoski says that he will propose a program to the 2007 Legislature that will strengthen the Oregon State Police by providing 24-hour, seven-days-a-week patrol coverage on Oregon’s highways, and beefing up criminal investigation and crime-lab services to fight meth trafficking, ID theft and other crimes.

“We must restore full capability to the Oregon State Police,” the Governor said. “For the sake of our troopers, and for the safety of our citizens, we must rebuild this critical agency. I am committed to fighting for the safety of our communities and adequate investment in our State Police.”

In 1979, the State Police had 665 sworn, fulltime troopers, the Governor pointed out. Because of successive budget cutbacks during the past 27 years, the agency now has only 333 -- about half as many, even though the state’s population has grown by more than a million, or 40 percent.

Sikh Man Stabbed in California

Hate crimes against Sikhs sky rocketed after September 11th, 2001. A Sikh Temple in Salem was recently vandalized, and also branded a hate crime.

(SANTA CLARA, Ca.) - Various news agencies in California are reporting that a 20-year-old man was arrested for allegedly stabbing a man in the neck in an apparent hate crime. Everett Thompson was booked into Santa Clara County Jail on suspicion of attempted murder and a hate crime in the stabbing of 40-year-old Iqbal Singh, a Sikh.

We reported last week on Salem-news.com that the Dashmesh Darbar Sikh Temple in Salem was attacked. The saffron flag with the Khanda, known as the Sri Nishaan Sahib, the symbol of the Sikh faith was set ablaze. The fire spread to a nearby grassy area and fence. Firefighters said it was fortunate that the building was not destroyed.

Southbound I-5 Near Kuebler Boulevard Exit 252 Down to One Lane for Paving This Weekend

Drivers should expect slow traffic on the freeway between Friday night and Saturday morning.

(SALEM) - Interstate 5 north of Kuebler Blvd. in Salem will be reduced to one lane Friday night through Saturday morning. Crews will be doing paving work from 10:00 PM Friday, until the following morning at 9:00 AM.

OSU Researchers: Recurring Dead Zone Off Oregon is Spreading

A fundamental new trend in atmospheric and ocean circulation patterns in the Pacific Northwest appears to have begun, scientists say, and apparently is expanding its scope beyond Oregon waters.

Police Investigate Death in Newport

A charter boat found the man's body about two miles offshore, police say there is no obvious sign of foul play.

(NEWPORT) - Oregon State Police, with the assistance of the Lincoln County Medical Examiner, are investigating the death of an unidentified male found in the Pacific Ocean south of the South Jetty in the Newport area.


Tuesday at approximately 12:15 PM, Oregon State Police were notified that the U.S. Coast Guard was bringing a deceased male found in the ocean to their Yaquina Bay Coast Guard Station. The body was reportedly found by a charter boat floating in the ocean two miles south of the South Jetty about 1/2 mile offshore.


The deceased white male adult appears to be in his 40's and had no identification. There is no obvious sign of foul play. No further description is being provided at this time.
