Firefighters make significant progress fighting the Black Crater conflagration.

(SISTERS) - Structural and wildland fire crews made significant progress in controlling the threat to structures posed by the Black Crater Conflagration burning southwest of Sisters in Deschutes County.

State Fair Honoring Oregon’s Veterans With Veterans Appreciation Days

Free admission, special music and events are planned for Veterans’ Appreciation Days at the Oregon State Fair.

(SALEM) - Veterans looking to attend the Oregon State Fair should plan ahead to save big.

The Oregon State Fair is recognizing the service and sacrifice of Oregon veterans by providing free admission during the first weekend of the fair.

This is for veterans only.

Free admission dates are Saturday and Sunday, August 26th and 27th.

Oregon Governor Gets an Airborne View of Destructive Central Oregon Fires

Governor of Oregon Ted Kulongoski says the Black Crater Fire is the worst in Oregon, but it is only one of several burning trees and firefighting resources.

(SISTERS) - Fires in Central Oregon have agencies scrambling. One blaze called the Black Crater Fire near Sisters, consumed more than 4,700 acres between Friday night and Saturday morning.

List of Oregon`s Worst 100 Invasive Species Updated

State agriculture officials want to spread the word and keep the problematic species out of Oregon.

(SALEM) - Alder root rot, Paterson's curse, imported fire ant, and now an aquatic plant commonly called rock snot. The unattractive names match the insidious nature of their existence as part of Oregon's annual list of the 100 most dangerous species threatening to invade the state.

An updated version of the list has been released by the Oregon Invasive Species Council so that Oregonians will know a little bit more about the types of organisms knocking at the door.

"These are species that have established and are harmful in other places with environments similar to Oregon's," says Dan Hilburn, administrator of the Oregon Department of Agriculture's Plant Division, and member of the Invasive Species Council.

Early Morning Crash in Rural Yamhill County Kills Wilsonville Man

(NEWBERG) - A single vehicle crash in the 32000 block of Wilsonville Rd. claimed the life of a 46-year-old Wilsonville man early Saturday morning.

The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle has been identified as Russell Irvin Michel. He was not wearing safety restraints.

Yamhill County Sheriff Jack Crabtree said that the 12:50 PM crash 3 miles east of Newberg, occurred when the east bound Nissan Pathfinder drifted off the road and spun out of control, crashing into an embankment.

Albertsons to Close Two Salem and Portland Stores, One in Beaverton Within The Next Two Months

Albertsons will also be closing six stores in Washington state, and one in Utah.

Police Encourage Residents to Join in National Night Out

The Salem and Keizer Police Departments are preparing for the annual National Night Out festivities on Tuesday, August 1st.

(SALEM) - Between the hours of 6:00 PM and 10:00 PM, residents are asked to joins thousands of communities across the nation to open their doors, turn on their outside lights and spend the evening outside visiting with neighbors and police.

National Night Out is designed to: 1) Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; 2) Generate support and participation in local anti-crime efforts; 3) Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community relations; 4) Send a message to criminals letting them know neighborhoods are organizing and fighting back.

It can be a simple front yard block party or huge close-your-street block party potluck with games and activities for children.

Scio Man Drowns on the Umpqua River

Another tragic drowning in Oregon this summer because the victim wasn’t wearing a life jacket.

(ELKTON) - The Douglas County Sheriff’s office recovered the body Friday morning of a Scio man who drowned on the Umpqua River Thursday.

Sheriff spokesperson Dwes Hutson said divers found the body of 39-year-old Gary Charles Weaver just before 10:00 AM.
Huston says around 4:30 PM Thursday night, the county 911 center received a call indicating Weaver had gone swimming in the Umpqua River at about 4:00 PM.

Apparently Weaver and a friend decided to float through a section of rapids. Neither subject was wearing a floatation device.

Weaver's friend decided the current was too fast for his ability and got out of the water. Weaver continued floating down the rapids and disappeared after a couple of minutes Huston said.

Salem Man Suffers Broken Neck in Kite Tube Accident on Detroit Lake

The doctor at Santiam Hospital who treated 24-year-old Jessie Howard said that he is lucky not to be paralyzed.

(DETROIT) - Kite tubes -they look exciting and fun but after a weekend at Detroit Lake, James Howard and his son Jessie, think differently.

"These things are deadly," says James Howard, who operated the boat.

"You just don't have any control and no time to respond."

The tube lifted off the water about three or four feet, but twisted sharply, ejecting Jessie out of the tube.

"I'd been riding the tube all morning, and on the last run all of a sudden it shot me up..."

Army National Guard to Provide Aerial Flight for Governor to see Black Crater Fire

(SALEM) - At 9:00 AM today, the 1042nd Medical Company of the Army National Guard will take Governor Kulongoski and Major General Raymond F. Rees, the Adjutant General of the Oregon National Guard on aerial tour of the Black Crater Fire, southwest of Sisters, Ore. They are scheduled for return at approximately 1:00 PM.

Our own Tim King will be on board the flight and will provide pool video upon return to the Army Aviation Flight Facility. He has professional quality equipment and will be able to download the video from his camera to media interested in the coverage of the fire video.

Governor Kulongoski will entertain media interviews upon his return to Salem, Ore.
