Salem Art Fair Begins! (VIDEO)

(SALEM) - Salem, Oregon’s 2006 Art Fair is up and running under beautiful summer skies. The event has been drawing some of the top artists from the west coast and beyond to Salem’s historic Bush’s Pasture Park for decades.

Oregon Soldiers Head to Mongolia for Training Exercise

The mission is considered a peacekeeping training exercise.

(SALEM) - More than 90 Oregon Army National Guard Soldiers, in B Company 2nd Battalion 162nd Infantry, from Corvallis and Eugene, will travel to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia for three weeks in August during the Khaan Quest IV 2006 training exercise to help train members of the Mongolian Armed Forces in United Nations peacekeeping operations.

B Company, 2-162 Inf. Bn. will deploy two infantry platoons, five trainers, tactical operations personnel, and several medics to Mongolia to participate in Khaan Quest IV, a platoon level, peace support operations training exercise sponsored by the Mongolian Armed Forces and U.S. Pacific Command.

Snowe-Wyden Urge Senate Leadership to Confront Looming Medicare Donut Hole

Senators Introduce Legislation Providing Relief to Those Who Will Experience a Gap in Coverage; Believe Price Negotiation Should Be Used to Fill In the Donut Hole.

(WASHINGTON, DC) - In anticipation of millions of seniors facing a potential gap in Medicare prescription drug coverage, known as the “donut hole,” Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) amd U.S. Senators Olympia J. Snowe (R-Maine) today introduced legislation, the Medicare Prescription Drug Lifeline Act, to ensure that seniors do not fall into the “donut hole” of Medicare prescription drug coverage by alerting seniors when they approach coverage limits (the donut hole) and allowing them to switch plans to avoid the gap.

At the same time, the Senators also renewed their pledge to push for passage of legislation to bring down drug costs through price negotiation for Medicare prescription drugs; the savings achieved could then also be used to close the coverage gap. Both Senators are members of the Senate Finance Committee, which has jurisdiction over Medicare.

Willamette Chapter of The American Red Cross Urges Caution During Heat Wave

The elderly and the very young are the most susceptible to heat illness.

(SALEM) - When the dog days of summer deliver hot temperatures and high humidity, the American Red Cross urges residents to take precautions against the heat.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 400 Americans die each year due to summer’s sweltering heat.

Furthermore, the National Weather Service asserts that excessive heat was the number one weather-related killer, causing more fatalities per year than floods, lightning, tornadoes, hurricanes, winter storms and extreme cold from 1994 to 2003.

Homeowners Get Their Wish, Sex Offenders Must Leave Halfway House

Angry neighbors cause the county to back off from a plan they had already agreed with.

(SHERIDAN) - A halfway house for sex offenders opened in Sheridan earlier this month. But because the mobile home drew so much community opposition, a Yamhill County sheriff's department official says it will now close.

The house, operated by Stepping Out Ministries, which operates two similar facilities in Salem. In Sheridan, west of McMinnville, it had a triple-wide mobile home.

Lt. Ken Summers says it's not going to work for them in that home, adding that the five men will be gone shortly.

Oregon`s Busiest ER Offers Heat-Safety Tips

How to handle the heat is top priority during these dog days of summer

(SALEM) - Salem Hospital will see more than 100,000 patients at its ER and Urgent Care Center this year, making it the busiest in the state.

The staff and physicians of the hospital's emergency department offer these tips to help you stay safe and what to do if you have problems in the heat. Stay well hydrated.

Aim for two to three quarts of fluid per day.

• Water is good, but don't limit your intake to just water. You also need electrolytes, which you can get from a variety of sports drinks.

• Caffeine beverages and sodas with caffeine dehydrate you. Since the goal is to stay well hydrated, stay away from caffeine.

If you're thirsty, you've waited too long.

Armed Robbery Suspect Shot And Killed by Police

The officer who fired the shot was identified as Dezi Meza, a 5-year veteran of the Albany Police Department. As is common in any traumatic incident, Officer Meza is now on paid administrative leave.

(ALBANY) - An Albany police officer shot and killed 32-year-old Rachel Lea Soto, who was wanted by police in connection with three armed robberies.

Capt. Eric Carter says officer Dezi Meza stopped to investigate a vehicle with two occupants inside.

Once at the vehicle, the officer drew his service weapon after he recognized the rear passenger as Rachel Soto.

Summer Sport Halibut Fishing to Open August 4th

There is no minimum length requirement for Pacific halibut, but the quota limits mean only one fish per day.

(NEWPORT) - The summer all-depth Pacific halibut sport fishery off the Oregon central coast between Cape Falcon and Humbug Mountain will open Aug. 4th-6th.

The fishery will be open on the following dates, until a quota of 50,074 pounds is reached by recreational anglers: Aug. 4th-6th, 18th-20th; Sept. 1st-3rd, 15th-17th, 29th-30th and Oct. 1st, 13th-15th, 27th-29th. More days may be added if it appears the quota will not be taken by Oct. 31st.

The summer fishery's quota was lowered to 50,074 from an original quota of 58,491 pounds due to overage in the spring fishery, which last closed July 8th. Anglers exceeded the spring quota of 175,474 pounds by 8,417 pounds. Because of this overage, the spring all-depth Pacific halibut fishery will not reopen July 20th-22nd.

Soldier Killed in Iraq From Mid-Willamette Valley

29-year old Jason Evey is one of several Corvallis soldiers to die in the war.

(BAGHDAD) - The Department of Defense has announced the death of another Oregon soldier in the war in Iraq.

29-year old Jason M. Evey of Stockton, Calif., died of injuries sustained when his Bradley Fighting Vehicle came in contact with an improvised explosive device during combat operations in Baghdad, Iraq, on July 16th.
