Clem and Evans Campaigns Plan Massive Canvass For `Restoring the Promise Day`

(SALEM) - The Brian Clem and Paul Evans campaigns plan a coordinated canvass effort that includes multiple grass roots organizations including the Oregon Bus Project, Stand for Children, Marion County Democrats, SEIU, and members of local Veterans groups.

Special guest, Congresswoman Darleen Hooley, will kick off the effort at 10:00 AM at Bush's Pasture Park in Salem.

(CORVALLIS) - NASA astronaut and Oregon State University alumnus Donald Pettit, who spent almost six months aboard the International Space Station after the space shuttle Columbia tragedy, will be the keynote speaker for da Vinci Days, an annual festival celebrating art, science and technology.

After the space shuttle Columbia disintegrated as it re-entered Earth’s atmosphere, scientists scrambled to bring Pettit and his crew safely back to Earth aboard the tiny Russian Soyuz spacecraft.

(SALEM) - No one should be required to breathe unhealthy air as a condition of employment.

Yet for the 35,000 Oregonians who work in places where indoor smoking is allowed, inhaling toxic fumes is an unavoidable part of the job.

U.S. Surgeon General Richard Carmona has released a comprehensive new report that definitively concludes that secondhand smoke is a killer and must be addressed as a serious hazard to public health. "The debate is over," Carmona said as he presented the findings. "The science is clear. Secondhand smoke is not a mere annoyance, but a serious public health hazard."

Westlund`s Campaign for Governor Passes 10,000 Signatures on July 4th

(BEND) - Over 10,000 Oregonians have signed the petition for State Senator Ben Westlund (I-Bend), an independent candidate for governor who is gathering signatures to qualify for the November ballot.

The campaign announced this week that his Independence Day efforts collected signatures in twelve cities across Oregon, netting 1,731 in one day and bringing his total to 10,465. Westlund must submit just over 18,000 valid signatures by the end of August to qualify for the ballot. Petitions can be downloaded and progress can be tracked on the website www.benwestlund.com.

Hate protestors from Kansas stayed home, getting cold feet rightfully influenced by the thousands of veterans on hand. Oregon is the first state to intimidate them out of attending, many hope it isn't the last.

(REDMOND) - Oregon laid a hero to rest Saturday. U.S. Army Private First Class Thomas Tucker of Madras, Oregon was killed in Iraq. He was a member of the U.S. Army’s 101st Airborne Division. Tom Tucker was loved by thousands in this rural central Oregon community.

Salem Fire Investigates Arson Fires

(SALEM) - Salem Fire investigators say a neighborhood off of Center Street NE was hit by an arsonist or arsonists early Thursday Morning.

They say two cars were damaged when lit fireworks were thrown into the vehicles. One of the vehicles was a total loss, burned entirely from the hot flames. Firefighters say it is fortunate nobody was hurt.

Salem Fire Department received their first call for a vehicle fire at 559 21st Street NE around 5:30 AM Thursday. Shortly after, another call came in for a second vehicle fire at 674 20th Street NE.

Firefighters arrived to find a fully involved Chrysler Concorde. The other vehicle, an Isuzu Rodeo, was reached by its owners before it was consumed by fire. They were able to extinguish the fire with a portable fire extinguisher.

Investigators with Salem Fire say damage was estimated at $7,000 for both vehicles that were involved in the fires described as having been intentional.

Marion County Fair Advance Tickets Now on Sale

(SALEM) - Advance tickets for the Marion County Fair are on sale now for carnival rides and admission.

Advance tickets for one-day unlimited carnival rides can be purchased for $15 through July 12th. Tickets will be $20 when purchased during the fair.

Family tickets can also be purchased in advance through July 12 for $12. A family of two adults and up to four children ages 6 through 11 can get a family ticket. Children five years old or younger are free every day. Family tickets will sell for $16 at the gate during the fair.

Armed Forces Network To End Radio Play-By-Play Sports

The September 9th NASCAR Nextel Cup race from Richmond International Raceway is scheduled to be the final AFN radio sports play-by-play broadcast.

(WASHINGTON D.C.) - The Department of Defense has announced that the American Forces Network (AFN) will cease broadcasting play-by-play sports on radio later this summer.

The decision to discontinue live play-by-play sports on radio was based upon a series of DOD worldwide audience surveys of military members and civilian employees stationed overseas, which showed the preference of viewers to watch sports, rather than just listen to them. The impact of live sports on overseas local affiliate radio schedules was also factored into the decision.

Study Finds Many Trailer Parks, And Families May Never Break The Label of `Trailer Trash`

The study reveals a huge social and economic crisis for families living in America’s rural trailer parks.

(CORVALLIS) - The denizens of America's rural trailer parks have heard all the snide comments about their homes – and they have been labeled everything from "trailer trash" to "tornado magnets" – but beneath that ridicule lie acute needs and real concerns, according to a new study.

“While mobile homes have emerged as the housing of choice among low-income rural households, many mobile home-dwellers face exorbitant interest rates, social instability from high turnover rates in trailer park neighborhoods, stigmatization and discrimination in the community and schools, and a lack of opportunities for their children,” said Katherine A. MacTavish, an assistant professor of human development and sciences at Oregon State University and lead author of the study.

(SALEM) - Liberty St NE Between Division St NE and Broadway St NE and High St NE - Lanes narrowed and shifted for bridge repair work. Expect minor delays in this area.

Center Street NE is closed to all thru traffic between 17th Street NE and 12th Street NE for the demolition and rebuilding of the bridge over Mill Creek. A detour route using 17th Street NE, State Street and 12th Street NE is in place.

Be Aware! The speed limit on I-5 through south Salem has been reduced to 50 MPH during the ODOT I-5 widening project.

Highway 22 drivers should watch for work at the interchange of highways 223 and 99W in the Dallas area.

Paving work has begun on Highway 221 between Dayton and Salem minor delays are expected between the Spring Creek Bridge and the Palmer Creek Bridge.
