8-Year-Old to Become School Principal For The Day

Students at St. Vincent de Paul can expect long PE classes, longer recesses, and best of all NO uniforms for the day.

(SALEM) - For Keizer 8-year-old Mickey Walker, a dream, that most of us wish we could have had when we attended school, is about to come true.

St. Vincent de Paul School Principal, Ruth Whitnah, has named Walker, as "Principal", for Thursday, May 25th .

The announcement was part of a school fundraiser that Mickey won.

Mickey will arrive to school, around 8:00 AM, in a white 10-passenger stretch limousine, provided as part of the special day, by Advantage Limousine in Keizer.

Passenger Dies After Pedestrian is Struck Near Keizer

Strange circumstances began with a pedestrian being run over, and ended with a passenger in the car dying, after the car also sheared a utility pole and hit a tree.

(KEIZER) - Marion County deputies responding to a harassment call near Keizer Thursday just after 7:00 PM, were advised while enroute, of a car versus pedestrian accident and a car into a telephone pole, in the same area.

After arriving, deputies were able to determine that the two accidents were actually part of the single incident they had originally been dispatched to.

They also found that one of the occupants of the vehicle was deceased at the scene. The Marion County CRASH team was called out to investigate the accident.

Deputies were able to determine that the suspect vehicle was leaving the Naples St. N area when it struck a pedestrian.

Car Chase in Jaguar Lands Two Men in Jail

(SALEM) - Two men are in custody after leading Salem police on a high speed chase in northeast Salem Thursday night that is reported to have exceeded 90 miles-an-hour.

A Salem Police spokesman says 25-year-old Marcus Potter and 26-year-old Brain Shamberger were driving in a Jaguar that was reported to be speeding at over 90 MPH on Lansing Ave.

Salem officers say they gave chase, but they didn't have to go very far. The Jaguar went airborne and landed at the intersection on Lansing Ave and Sunnyview Rd.

Three Survive Plane Crash in Washington

(BATTLE GROUND, Wa.) - Officials in Battle Ground Washington say three people are alive after a Cessna 210 aircraft crashed and caught fire at the Buzzard Flats Airport, a private airstrip that has been in use since the early 40's.

Local dispatchers first heard about the crash of a small plane around 8:00 PM Friday. Witnesses reported that there were three occupants seen exiting out of the plane and that it was now on fire.

Fire personnel, American Medical Response and Clark County Sheriff's Deputies responded to the scene. When they arrived the plane was in flames and the fire had spread to trees at the end of the runway.

Carlton Woman Dies in Crash Near Dayton

Failure to stop at a stop sign changes many lives

(DAYTON) - State Police say one person was killed Thursday evening and three others injured in a two vehicle crash on Highway 221 about two miles south of Dayton.

They say their preliminary investigation indicates that one driver with a suspended license failed to stop at a stop sign, causing the crash.

Around 7:30 PM Thursday, a Chevrolet Tracker sport utility vehicle driven by 22-year old Clinton Jessen of Carlton was westbound on S.E. Mallard Lane when police say it failed to stop for a stop sign at the intersection with Highway 221.

As the entered the intersection it crashed into the driver's side of a southbound 1994 Ford Explorer sport utility vehicle driven by 18-year old Corey Hilton of Salem.

Salem Fire Department to Offer Free Life Jackets

Drowning is the second-leading cause of injury-related deaths among children under the age of 15.

(SALEM) - Thanks to a generous donation by Walery`s Pizza, the Salem Fire Department is able to purchase life jackets to be distributed to the citizens of Salem for free.

Nearly nine people each day die in the United States due to drowning.

With summer approaching and the weather warming up the risk of drowning increases, due to more people in the water. It is estimated that over 70% of these drowning `s could have been prevented if the person was just wearing a life jacket.

Annual Sheep to Shawl Saturday at Mission Mill

Bush Requests $1.9B to Bolster Borders

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - President Bush sent Congress a $1.9 billion request Thursday to increase border security as supporters of sweeping immigration legislation reasserted control in Senate debate

The White House said the money would pay for the "first 1,000 of 6,000 new Border Patrol agents that will be deployed in the next two years," as well as the temporary deployment of up to 6,000 National Guard troops to states along the Mexican border. The request includes funds for new fencing and other barriers as well as two new unmanned surveillance aircraft and five helicopters to curb illegal immigration.

The White House sent the request to Congress as the president traveled to Yuma, Ariz. to dramatize his commitment to border control and the Senate labored over the most sweeping overhaul of immigration law in two decades.

North Salem JROTC Color Guard Does Salem Proud at National Championships

In their first appearance in a national competition, North Salem finished in sixteenth place.

(SALEM) - On Friday, May 5th in Daytona Beach Florida, North Salem High School's JROTC Color Guard A competed at the National High School Drill Team Championships.

Fresh from a second place finish at the Northwest Regional Championships two weeks earlier, the Vikings went up against the thirty-two best color guards in the United States.

Lieutenant Colonel Dwight Morse, the color guard coach, was pleased with the results of the competition. `Going in, we weren't quite sure what to expect. We were surprised to be one of the few coed color guards in the field.
